AGC launches solvent- and surfactant-free fluoroelastomers, advancing sustainable semiconductor materials without compromising high-performance sealing and durability standards.

AGC, a global leader in the production of glass, chemicals, and advanced materials, has announced a significant advancement in its fluoroelastomer portfolio with the launch of a new, environmentally conscious product line. The company has introduced new grades under its “AFLAS™ FFKM” series that are completely free from surfactants and fluorinated polymerization solvents—substances traditionally considered essential in the production of high-performance fluoroelastomers.

These new materials, referred to as the SF grades, maintain the same high-level performance as conventional FFKM products while aligning with the increasing demand for cleaner, more sustainable manufacturing processes. This innovation stems from AGC’s proprietary “Surfactant-Free & Fluoro Solvent-Free Technology,” a breakthrough in polymer manufacturing that eliminates the need for any fluorinated processing aids or surfactants. The technology marks a milestone in AGC’s long-standing efforts to refine its polymerization techniques and improve environmental compatibility.

Initially, this new production technology will be applied to high-temperature-resistant FFKM grades specifically tailored for semiconductor manufacturing equipment. The first commercial-grade product is being launched this month. AGC also plans to expand this innovative technology to cover additional FFKM types, gradually incorporating them into the broader “AFLAS™ FFKM” series.

The “AFLAS™ FFKM” series is renowned for its exceptional chemical, heat, and plasma resistance, making it highly suitable for use in extreme environments such as semiconductor fabrication, oil and gas exploration, and healthcare applications. Within the semiconductor industry, AFLAS™ FFKM plays a crucial role in the etching process, where its outstanding resistance to plasma degradation makes it an ideal choice for sealing applications. This resistance not only ensures operational safety but also significantly extends equipment maintenance cycles.

Historically, the use of surfactants and fluorinated polymerization solvents was deemed essential for improving the reactivity of fluorinated monomers and ensuring efficient production processes. However, with increasing environmental concerns and stricter industry standards, especially in the semiconductor sector, there has been a marked shift in customer expectations toward cleaner, more sustainable materials. Meeting these demands without compromising the high-performance characteristics of FFKM posed a major technical challenge that many in the industry had yet to overcome.

AGC has now succeeded where others have struggled. Leveraging decades of experience and deep expertise in polymer science, the company has developed and implemented a novel method that facilitates the mass production of high-performance FFKM without relying on traditional chemical aids. This breakthrough enables AGC to meet stringent market expectations while also contributing to a more sustainable and responsible manufacturing ecosystem.

Aligned with its corporate philosophy, “Look Beyond,” AGC remains committed to enhancing lives globally through its innovative materials and technological solutions. The introduction of these advanced, eco-friendly fluoroelastomers is a testament to AGC’s dedication to supporting sustainable development and building a safer, more resilient society.
