Air Liquide launches Taiwan advanced materials plant, boosting semiconductor supply chain, enabling AI chip innovation, and strengthening regional manufacturing partnerships and capabilities.

Air Liquide has officially inaugurated its first Advanced Materials manufacturing facility in Taiwan, marking a significant milestone in its strategy to support the rapidly evolving semiconductor industry. The new plant, located in Taichung City, represents the company’s first large-scale production site in Taiwan dedicated to advanced deposition and etching materials—critical components required for manufacturing next-generation semiconductor chips. These materials play a vital role in enabling cutting-edge technologies such as Artificial Intelligence (AI) and High-Performance Computing (HPC), both of which demand increasingly powerful and efficient chips.

Already well-established in Taiwan, Air Liquide operates 54 facilities serving the semiconductor sector. The addition of this new site further strengthens its presence in one of the world’s most advanced semiconductor ecosystems. Taiwan has become a global hub for chip manufacturing, and by expanding its footprint here, the company aims to enhance its ability to meet the growing demand for highly specialized materials required in semiconductor fabrication.

The newly inaugurated facility is strategically positioned at the center of this high-tech cluster and is designed to produce highly engineered molecules tailored for nano-scale manufacturing processes. Among these processes is Atomic Layer Deposition (ALD), a critical technique used to create ultra-thin layers of materials with atomic precision. As semiconductor manufacturers continue to push the limits of miniaturization—approaching atomic-scale production—the need for consistent, high-quality materials has become more crucial than ever. Any variation in material performance can significantly impact chip efficiency and yield.

By localizing the production of these advanced materials, Air Liquide is enabling semiconductor companies in Taiwan and across Asia to access reliable, high-performance inputs more efficiently. This proximity not only strengthens the resilience of the supply chain but also reduces logistical complexities and lead times. Moreover, being close to customers allows for deeper technical collaboration, helping chipmakers accelerate innovation cycles and scale up production more effectively.

This development also complements the company’s broader ecosystem in Taiwan, where it has maintained a strong presence for nearly four decades. Since 2019, Air Liquide has invested over €1 billion in the region, building a comprehensive portfolio that includes ultra-pure industrial gases, advanced electronic materials, delivery systems, and analytical services. The new facility further integrates into this network, reinforcing the company’s commitment to delivering end-to-end solutions for semiconductor manufacturing.

According to Armelle Levieux, who oversees the Electronics business line, the new plant highlights the company’s ambition to play a central role in driving future technological advancements, particularly in AI. She emphasized that Taiwan’s position as a leading semiconductor hub makes it a strategic location for supporting the next generation of chip innovation. The inauguration also reflects Air Liquide’s ongoing efforts to deepen partnerships with top-tier chip manufacturers by supplying state-of-the-art materials tailored to their evolving needs.

Overall, this expansion not only reinforces Air Liquide’s leadership in the advanced materials segment but also signals its long-term commitment to Asia’s semiconductor industry. The new plant stands as a key step in strengthening global supply chains while enabling the continued advancement of technologies that power the digital economy.
