Alba acquires Aluminium Dunkerque for $2.2 billion, expanding low-carbon aluminium production, European market access, and global capacity.
Aluminium Bahrain (Alba) has announced a significant strategic move with its acquisition of Aluminium Dunkerque, the largest aluminium smelter in the European Union, in a deal valued at approximately $2.2 billion. This transaction, revealed during the Choose France Summit in Paris, sees Alba taking 100% ownership of the French facility located near Dunkirk.
A key aspect of the acquisition involves Bpifrance, the French public investment bank, which will invest €100 million to secure a 6% minority stake in Aluminium Dunkerque's holding company and gain a seat on its board of directors. This involvement underscores France's commitment to maintaining oversight of a critical industrial asset and reinforces the long-term future of the site, supporting the nation's industrial resilience and innovation. The acquisition has already received clearance from EU antitrust authorities in May, with other customary approvals pending. The entire purchase price will be financed by a consortium of Alba's banking partners.
The acquisition is a pivotal step in Alba's overarching strategy to establish a global low-carbon aluminium platform and build a more diversified and competitive international industrial presence. Aluminium Dunkerque, with an annual production capacity of around 300,000 metric tons, brings significant scale and advanced operational capabilities to Alba's portfolio. The French plant's strategic location provides Alba direct access to the European market, which is experiencing rising demand for low-carbon primary aluminium, particularly from the automotive, aerospace, construction, and packaging sectors.
Economically, the deal comes at a time of tight conditions in the global aluminium market, with prices recently soaring to a four-year high, driven by physical market tightness, geopolitical tensions such as the Iran war, and potential tariff adjustments. Despite a 17% drop in sales volumes in Q1 2026 due to shipping disruptions and raw material constraints, Alba recorded a 316% jump in net profit for the same period, benefiting from these elevated prices. The acquisition is expected to further strengthen Alba's financial position and reduce its concentration risk by diversifying its operational footprint.
From a geopolitical and industry-specific perspective, Bpifrance's investment ensures that Aluminium Dunkerque remains a cornerstone of France's industrial strategy and contributes to Europe's energy transition and industrial sovereignty objectives. Alba has committed to ensuring operational continuity, preserving employment, and reinforcing low-carbon production at the facility, aligning with France's industrial priorities. This move will expand Alba's global customer base and combine its existing capacity (over 1.623 million metric tonnes a year) with Aluminium Dunkerque's output, reaching a combined nameplate capacity of approximately 1.9 million tonnes annually.
