Amcor’s lightweight Hector closure merges sustainability, safety, and sleek design, offering brands eco-friendly, child-resistant packaging with strong shelf appeal.

Amcor, a global leader in sustainable packaging innovations, has unveiled a new polypropylene (PP) closure designed specifically for household cleaning products. Named the Hector Child Resistant Closure (CRC), the closure stands out for its blend of aesthetic appeal, safety features, and commitment to environmental responsibility.

Weighing just 7.25 grams, Hector is among the lightest closures of its kind on the market. This weight reduction translates to significant material and carbon savings. For example, when compared to a conventional 14-gram closure, Hector offers a 6.75-tonne reduction in plastic usage for every one million units produced. These savings contribute to lower overall CO2 emissions and align with brands’ increasing focus on eco-friendly packaging solutions.

Beyond its lightweight structure, Hector is engineered for high recyclability. The closure has been evaluated using industry-standard recyclability self-assessment tools and achieved the top rating when paired with bottles made from either HDPE or PET. Additionally, it can be manufactured using up to 100% CleanStream® PCR (post-consumer recycled) plastic—Amcor’s premium recycled polymer designed for non-contact-sensitive applications in both home and industrial settings.

Designed with functionality and user experience in mind, Hector features a two-piece construction comprising a dome-shaped overcap and a directional nozzle. Its ergonomic, curved form enhances usability and mirrors the common curvature of bleach and cleaner bottles, contributing to a unified and visually attractive package. With the option to fit 38mm necks for HDPE bottles and 36mm necks for PET bottles, the closure enhances on-shelf visibility and brand recognition.

For added convenience and safety, the closure includes an intuitive squeeze-and-turn child-resistant mechanism with thumb and finger holds, enabling secure handling while minimizing the risk of accidental opening. The nozzle is tailored for precision dosing, allowing users to apply cleaning solutions accurately, even in hard-to-reach spaces. Meanwhile, the overcap provides a leak-proof seal for secure storage.

Hector can also be fully customized in terms of color and design to align with brand identity, providing marketers with a sustainable solution that doesn’t compromise on visual impact or functionality.

Commenting on the innovation, Alejandra Beltran, Vice President of R&D for Amcor Global Rigid Packaging Solutions, said: “Hector is a consumer-driven innovation that balances safety, visual differentiation, and sustainability. It demonstrates that a product can be both lightweight and robust, aesthetic and sustainable, without compromising performance or appeal.”

Amcor’s latest closure solution exemplifies how thoughtful design can harmonize consumer needs with environmental responsibility, offering a forward-thinking alternative for brands aiming to enhance both packaging appeal and ecological impact.
