ArcelorMittal and AWS collaborate to deploy AI, cloud technologies, and lower-carbon steel solutions, enhancing automation, efficiency, and sustainable construction globally.

ArcelorMittal has announced a strategic partnership with Amazon Web Services (AWS) aimed at accelerating digital transformation, industrial automation, and sustainable steel production across its global manufacturing network. The collaboration combines AWS’s advanced cloud computing, artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and edge technologies with ArcelorMittal’s steelmaking expertise to create more intelligent, efficient, and environmentally responsible production facilities.

Through this partnership, ArcelorMittal will integrate AWS’s cloud-based infrastructure into its manufacturing operations, enabling a closer convergence between operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT). This integration will allow the company to process and analyze real-time industrial data directly at the production level, improving decision-making and operational performance across its steel plants worldwide.

The use of AWS technologies will support a broad range of advanced industrial applications, including predictive maintenance, AI-powered quality inspections using computer vision, process optimization, and the development of digital twins for production assets and manufacturing lines. By leveraging industrial Internet of Things (IoT) systems, real-time sensor monitoring, and machine learning algorithms, ArcelorMittal aims to create smarter facilities capable of identifying issues before failures occur, improving product quality, reducing downtime, and enhancing overall asset reliability.

The adoption of AI and cloud technologies is also expected to strengthen workplace safety and improve energy efficiency. By enabling production systems to continuously collect, interpret, and respond to operational data, ArcelorMittal intends to establish a new generation of digitally connected plants that can learn and optimize their performance in real time. This transformation represents a significant step toward industrializing AI throughout the entire steel manufacturing value chain.

To support this large-scale digital transformation, AWS will also develop and implement a comprehensive training and education initiative for ArcelorMittal employees worldwide. The program will equip the company’s workforce with the skills required to effectively use cloud platforms, AI applications, and digital tools, ensuring successful adoption of emerging technologies across all operational sites.

Beyond technological collaboration, the partnership also includes a multi-year Supply Framework Agreement between Amazon and ArcelorMittal for the provision of structural steel across Europe and the United Kingdom. Under this agreement, ArcelorMittal will supply its lower-carbon XCarb® steel products for use in Amazon’s operational buildings and AWS data centres. The agreement supports Amazon’s broader sustainability objective of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and highlights the shared commitment of both companies to reduce the carbon footprint of the construction industry.

Tanuja Randery, Managing Director and Vice President for AWS EMEA, emphasized that ArcelorMittal is transforming traditional steelmaking by implementing AI-driven solutions for predictive maintenance, operational efficiency, and energy optimization. She stated that AWS is proud to provide industrial-scale cloud, edge computing, and AI capabilities that will help ArcelorMittal improve safety, efficiency, and sustainability across steelmaking facilities in 14 countries.

Nik Puri, Group CIO and CISO at ArcelorMittal, described the plant floor as the next major frontier for digital transformation in the steel industry. He highlighted that integrating cloud and AI technologies directly into manufacturing operations will enable facilities to sense, analyze, and optimize processes continuously. By unifying OT and IT systems on a secure digital platform, ArcelorMittal aims to achieve safer operations, improved production reliability, and a more sustainable steel manufacturing model.

This strategic alliance demonstrates how advanced digital technologies and lower-carbon materials can work together to reshape the future of global steel production and sustainable infrastructure development.

Market Impact: The collaboration between ArcelorMittal and AWS is expected to positively impact steel products by improving manufacturing efficiency, product quality, asset reliability, and energy management through AI, cloud computing, and advanced automation. The increased production of lower-carbon XCarb® steel may strengthen the adoption of sustainable construction materials, particularly in data centres and infrastructure projects.

For chemical commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst, the immediate price impact is likely to remain neutral, as the agreement does not directly increase chemical production capacity or significantly alter raw material consumption. However, in the long term, greater adoption of digitalized and lower-carbon steelmaking processes may influence demand for industrial gases such as oxygen, nitrogen, and argon, as well as emerging low-carbon inputs like hydrogen. Improved operational efficiency may optimize chemical consumption rates, potentially balancing demand growth. Overall, this move may provide slight long-term support to prices of decarbonization-related chemicals, while short-term market fundamentals are expected to remain unchanged.
