The Navi Mumbai facility has achieved ISCC PLUS certification for its coating resins, marking a significant step in its global Mass Balance strategy to offer more sustainable solutions to customers in India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East.

Arkema, a global leader in specialty materials, today announced a pivotal achievement in its sustainability roadmap with the attainment of ISCC PLUS (International Sustainability & Carbon Certification) for its coating resin production facility in Navi Mumbai, India. This significant certification encompasses the plant's specialty acrylic and alkyd resins, as well as its polyester liquid and powder resins.

The ISCC PLUS certification is a cornerstone of Arkema's ambitious global Mass Balance offer roadmap. This innovative approach allows the company to track and attribute renewable and more circular feedstocks throughout its production system, ensuring that certified sustainable raw materials are accounted for in the final products. For customers across India, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East, this translates into access to more sustainable coating solutions critical for sectors such as energy and infrastructure efficiency, e-mobility, new technologies, urbanization, and enhancing living comfort.

Vivek Jagtap, Managing Director of Arkema Chemicals India Pvt. Ltd., emphasized the strategic importance of the Navi Mumbai site. "Navi Mumbai is a key production and innovation hub in the region where we have been working on new solutions, including gradually substituting virgin fossil feedstocks with renewable and more circular sources, to improve our offer," said Jagtap.

The new certification is poised to facilitate the progressive introduction of a comprehensive range of bio-attributed specialty resins and additives. This includes high solids, waterborne, UV-LED-EB (Ultraviolet Light Emitting Diode - Electron Beam), and polyester powder materials, all designed to offer enhanced environmental performance without compromising on quality or functionality. This latest achievement in India also complements Arkema's recent ISCC PLUS certifications for its powder coating resins facilities in Spain and Malaysia.

Understanding the core concepts of "Mass Balance" and "Bio-attributed" content is crucial to appreciating the impact of this certification. The Mass Balance traceability chain is a recognized method for tracking material flow, ensuring that an equivalent quantity of certified sustainable feedstock replaces fossil raw materials at the beginning of the supply chain. This accounting method verifies that the input and output are balanced, providing a credible pathway for sustainable materials. Similarly, "bio-attributed content" signifies that the use of a biobased or recycled feedstock has been ascribed to a product using this rigorous mass-balance methodology, with the percentage breakdown calculated according to ISCC+ standards.

Arkema continues to offer cutting-edge technological solutions to meet global challenges such as new energies, access to water, recycling, urbanization, and mobility, fostering a continuous dialogue with all its stakeholders. The Group reported sales of around €9.5 billion in 2024 and operates in some 55 countries with 21,150 employees worldwide, firmly positioning itself at the forefront of sustainable material innovation.
