Avantium Completes FDCA Plant Commissioning, Eyes First Production

Avantium completes purification-unit commissioning at its FDCA Flagship Plant, moving closer to first production and commercial deliveries by end-2026.

Avantium N.V., a renewable and circular polymer materials company, has reached another major milestone in the development of its FDCA Flagship Plant in Delfzijl, the Netherlands. The company has successfully completed commissioning of the plant’s purification unit, bringing all major process units into commissioned status and moving the facility closer to full-scale production of furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA).

The Delfzijl facility is designed to become the world’s first commercial-scale plant dedicated to FDCA production. FDCA is an important renewable chemical building block that can be used in the manufacture of PEF (polyethylene furanoate), a next-generation polymer intended to provide an alternative to conventional fossil-based packaging materials such as PET. The successful commissioning of the purification unit represents a critical step toward demonstrating Avantium’s technology at commercial scale.

The latest milestone follows the earlier successful start-up of the plant’s utility systems and sugar dehydration unit, as well as the commissioning of the oxidation unit. With these key process areas now commissioned, Avantium has moved into integrated start-up activities and is preparing to manufacture its first batches of FDCA.

Hero de Jager, interim Chief Operations Officer of Avantium, said that commissioning the purification unit represents an important advancement in the plant’s start-up process. With commissioning of all major process units completed, the company’s immediate priority is producing the first FDCA batches while maintaining a strong focus on safe and successful plant operations. Avantium also plans to begin commercial deliveries under existing offtake agreements once the product has successfully completed the necessary qualification process.

During the remainder of 2026, Avantium will concentrate on completing the full start-up of the FDCA Flagship Plant, producing initial FDCA batches, conducting qualification activities and preparing for commercial sales. Commercial deliveries under existing agreements are expected to begin toward the end of 2026, subject to successful start-up and product qualification.

The successful commissioning and subsequent production campaign could provide important commercial-scale validation of Avantium’s FDCA technology. This may strengthen the company’s position in future licensing discussions and support broader adoption of renewable polymer technologies.

Following start-up, Avantium expects the facility to require approximately 24 months to reach its full design capacity. The gradual ramp-up will allow the company to optimize operations, qualify the product with customers and establish consistent commercial production.

Chemical Commodity Price Impact

The commissioning strengthens the outlook for FDCA by moving Avantium closer to commercial-scale production and validating its renewable production technology. Initial output is expected to support PEF production and could gradually improve the availability of bio-based polymer feedstock. However, the plant’s approximately 24-month ramp-up means the immediate impact on global FDCA supply should remain limited. Successful commercialization could eventually increase competitive pressure on fossil-based alternatives such as PET, MEG and PTA, particularly in sustainable packaging applications. In the near term, FDCA prices may remain firm because supply is still developing, while broader polymer markets are unlikely to experience significant price disruption until production scales substantially.
