Avantium earned triple ISO certification, validating its strong commitment to environmental responsibility, workplace safety, and consistent high-quality FDCA production.
Avantium N.V., a pioneer in renewable and circular polymer materials, has reached a major operational milestone by successfully securing three internationally recognised ISO certifications for its FDCA Flagship Plant located in Delfzijl. The certifications—ISO 14001 for Environmental Management, ISO 45001 for Occupational Health and Safety Management, and ISO 9001 for Quality Management—apply to the production of intermediate chemicals used in the manufacture of FDCA.
The rigorous certification process was conducted by DNV, an independent and globally respected assurance and risk management organisation. Following an in-depth audit, DNV confirmed that Avantium’s management systems fully comply with the stringent requirements of all three ISO standards. This recognition highlights that the company’s processes, controls, and operational discipline meet globally accepted benchmarks for quality, safety, and environmental responsibility.
Securing ISO 14001 underscores Avantium’s systematic approach to minimising its environmental footprint. The certification reflects structured efforts to manage energy and resource use, reduce emissions and waste, and continuously improve environmental performance across operations. As Avantium works to commercialise sustainable alternatives to fossil-based materials, robust environmental management is a critical enabler of long-term success and credibility.
The ISO 45001 certification further demonstrates Avantium’s strong focus on protecting the health and safety of its workforce. By embedding occupational health and safety into daily operations, the company ensures that risks are proactively identified, mitigated, and monitored. This standard promotes a culture where employee wellbeing is prioritised, helping to create a safe, resilient, and productive working environment as the organisation scales up its industrial activities.
ISO 9001 certification, meanwhile, validates Avantium’s commitment to consistent quality and operational excellence. It confirms that the company has well-defined processes in place to ensure reliability, traceability, and continuous improvement in the production of its intermediate chemicals. This quality framework is essential for building trust with partners, customers, and stakeholders across the chemical value chain, particularly as Avantium advances toward larger-scale commercial deployment.
Achieving all three certifications simultaneously is a strong signal of Avantium’s integrated approach to sustainability, safety, and quality. Rather than treating these areas as separate priorities, the company has aligned them within a unified management framework that supports disciplined execution and long-term value creation. This alignment is especially important as Avantium continues to scale its proprietary technology for FDCA production and contribute to the transition toward a fossil-free chemical industry.
Commenting on the achievement, Nanda Weitering, Quality Manager at Avantium, emphasised the people-driven nature of the milestone. She noted that the certifications are the result of collective effort and reflect the values that guide the organisation every day. According to her, safety, sustainability, and quality are deeply embedded in Avantium’s way of working, and the ISO standards provide a strong foundation for future growth and innovation.
Overall, the triple ISO certification marks an important step forward for Avantium, reinforcing its reputation as a responsible technology leader. It demonstrates readiness to operate at industrial scale while maintaining the highest international standards, supporting the company’s broader mission to enable sustainable materials and help reshape the global chemical industry.
