Avantium Signs FDCA Offtake Agreement with PLIXXENT for Use in Insulation Foams

William Faulkner 09-Jul-2025

Avantium partners with PLIXXENT to supply FDCA for sustainable insulation foams, enhancing performance and promoting eco-friendly building materials.

Avantium N.V., a frontrunner in the field of renewable and circular polymer materials, has entered into a significant five-year conditional offtake agreement with PLIXXENT, a prominent producer of polyurethane systems. As part of the agreement, PLIXXENT will procure furandicarboxylic acid (FDCA) from Avantium's FDCA Flagship Plant for incorporation into insulation foam products. This partnership marks an important development in sustainable material innovation, particularly in the building and construction sector.

FDCA is a fully plant-based monomer known for its excellent performance characteristics. It serves as a key building block in the production of sustainable materials, offering a renewable alternative to traditional petrochemical components. PLIXXENT has thoroughly assessed FDCA’s applicability in polyester polyols, which are essential precursors for polyurethane foams. The evaluation results confirmed that FDCA can significantly enhance the environmental profile and technical performance of insulation foams.

Compared to conventional foams derived from fossil-based materials, FDCA-based insulation foams offer notable environmental advantages. These include a reduced carbon footprint and better alignment with the growing demand for green building solutions. Moreover, FDCA contributes to superior thermal conductivity and enhanced flame resistance—two critical factors for effective insulation performance. Its mechanical strength and dimensional stability also ensure that the insulation maintains its form and function over extended periods, making it a reliable and durable option.

Jörg Schottek, CEO of PLIXXENT, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, stating, “We are thrilled to partner with Avantium and integrate FDCA into our insulation foam systems. This cooperation reinforces our long-standing commitment to sustainable innovation and empowers us to deliver high-performance, environmentally conscious products to our customers.”

Tom van Aken, CEO of Avantium, also emphasized the strategic importance of the agreement, saying, “This offtake arrangement with PLIXXENT represents our initial foray into the building materials industry. It underlines the versatility of FDCA and the increasing global interest in its diverse applications across multiple industries. We believe FDCA has the potential to transform a wide array of products while contributing to a more sustainable world.”

The collaboration between Avantium and PLIXXENT stands as a key milestone in advancing circular material technologies. It not only opens new market opportunities for FDCA but also supports the global transition towards sustainable construction practices. As the demand for environmentally responsible solutions continues to grow, partnerships like this one will be instrumental in redefining industry standards and driving innovation forward.

PLIXXENT stands as Europe’s foremost independent polyurethane systems provider, committed to pushing the boundaries of polyurethane technology and delivering customized solutions across diverse sectors. In the construction industry, for instance, sustainable insulation innovations play a vital role in fostering a greener future. Polyurethane systems are extensively employed in construction to enhance energy efficiency, extend durability, and improve aesthetics.
