Babcock & Wilcox secures $40M contract to provide advanced Wet Gas Scrubbing technology, enhancing SO2, NOx, and particulate control.

Babcock & Wilcox (B&W) has announced that it has been awarded an initial order worth $10 million, forming part of a broader contract valued at approximately $40 million. This contract involves the supply of its low-pressure Wet Gas Scrubbing (WGS) technology for deployment at a major petroleum refinery in Canada. The award underscores B&W’s growing role in providing advanced environmental solutions for complex industrial applications.

B&W is a licensed provider of ExxonMobil’s WGS technology, a proven solution that has already been implemented in more than 30 refinery projects across the globe. The company obtained rights to this cutting-edge sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions control system through its strategic acquisition of the business assets of Hamon Research-Cottrell Inc. in 2022. This move significantly strengthened B&W’s capabilities in delivering highly effective emissions control solutions tailored to the specific needs of its refinery and petrochemical clients.

Justin Chenevey, B&W’s Vice President of Environmental and ClimateBright, highlighted the company’s close collaboration with the refinery over recent years. “We have worked hand-in-hand with the refinery team to design a highly customized solution that addresses both the complex layout of the site and the stringent SO2 emissions requirements,” he stated. Chenevey emphasized that B&W’s extensive experience in refining and petrochemical operations, combined with exclusive access to this advanced WGS technology, enables the company to deliver solutions that are both effective and economically viable, even in the most challenging operational environments.

ExxonMobil’s WGS technology is recognized for its reliability in helping refiners consistently meet strict emissions standards associated with fluid catalytic cracking and fluid coker operations. In addition to its core capability of controlling SO2 emissions, the technology can also be enhanced to support compliance with regulations on nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter emissions. By leveraging this versatile system, refiners can implement a single, integrated solution to address multiple environmental compliance challenges simultaneously.

This award further demonstrates B&W’s commitment to advancing sustainable industrial practices and providing state-of-the-art environmental technologies to its clients. The company’s ability to combine proprietary technology with deep industry expertise positions it as a trusted partner for refineries seeking to achieve regulatory compliance while optimizing operational efficiency. With this project, B&W continues to reinforce its reputation as a leading provider of next-generation emissions control solutions.
