BASF and CATL form a global partnership to supply cathode materials, supporting CATL’s battery production and international expansion.

BASF, a leading chemical company, and Contemporary Amperex Technology Co., Ltd. (CATL), a global frontrunner in battery technologies, have entered into a comprehensive framework agreement focused on the supply and development of cathode active materials (CAM). This strategic partnership signifies a major step forward in advancing the global battery supply chain and promoting sustainable energy storage solutions.

Under this newly signed agreement, BASF will become a key supplier of cathode active materials to CATL, supporting its worldwide operations. The collaboration is structured to enhance CATL’s global production and expansion plans by leveraging BASF’s broad and well-established network of CAM production facilities. Through its presence across multiple continents, BASF is well-positioned to meet CATL's growing demand for high-performance battery materials and to ensure timely and efficient delivery to different regions.

Dr. Daniel Schönfelder, President of BASF’s Battery Materials division, emphasized the importance of this collaboration, stating, “We are proud to work with CATL, a global market leader in battery technology. Our diversified and local production footprint for innovative cathode materials will support CATL’s global business development.” He further added that BASF remains deeply committed to the evolving battery industry and will continue to strengthen such partnerships to drive innovation and sustainability.

This alliance between BASF and CATL reflects a mutual goal to accelerate the development of next-generation energy storage systems, which are crucial for the electrification of mobility and the transition toward a low-carbon future. By working together, the two companies aim to ensure secure and sustainable supply chains for electric vehicle (EV) batteries and stationary energy storage applications.

BASF brings to the partnership its extensive experience in material science and process innovation, while CATL contributes its expertise in battery manufacturing and global market reach. The synergy between these strengths is expected to foster advancements in battery performance, cost-efficiency, and environmental impact.

The agreement is also part of BASF’s broader strategy to expand its role in the battery value chain, from research and development to commercial-scale manufacturing of essential materials. This approach aligns with CATL’s ambition to grow its presence in international markets by establishing reliable supply partnerships and ensuring consistent quality and supply of key components.

In summary, this strategic framework agreement not only strengthens the existing relationship between BASF and CATL but also marks a significant milestone in the collaborative effort to scale up sustainable battery production and meet the increasing global demand for clean energy technologies.
