BASF Boosts Acid Chloride Capacity by 30% at Ludwigshafen

BASF modernized its Ludwigshafen plant, raising acid chloride and chloroformate capacity 30% while lowering carbon emissions and improving supply reliability.

BASF has officially inaugurated a fully modernized production plant for acid chlorides and chloroformates (ACCF) at its Ludwigshafen Verbund site in Germany, strengthening its position in the global intermediates market. The upgraded facility is designed to increase production capacity, improve operational efficiency, reduce environmental impact and provide more reliable supplies to customers worldwide.

The investment represents a low three-digit million-euro amount and includes a comprehensive renewal of the plant’s production infrastructure. Following the modernization, BASF has increased the facility’s production capacity by approximately 30%. The expansion is expected to help the company respond to growing demand for acid chlorides and chloroformates across several downstream industries.

BASF is among the leading global producers of these intermediates, with manufacturing operations in Ludwigshafen and Yeosu, South Korea. The company said the latest investment demonstrates its continued commitment to maintaining competitive and sustainable chemical production in Europe.

The modernization also delivers significant sustainability benefits. Since 2025, BASF has produced its entire Ludwigshafen portfolio of approximately 25 acid chlorides and chloroformates using renewable electricity credits, covering associated upstream raw material processes. According to the company, this transition has lowered the average product carbon footprint of the portfolio by 19%.

The reduction in emissions can help BASF’s customers progress toward their own Scope 3 emissions-reduction targets. Importantly, the company said the shift to renewable electricity does not require changes to product specifications, certifications or existing ordering procedures.

Acid chlorides and chloroformates are important building blocks used across numerous chemical value chains. Their applications include pharmaceutical manufacturing, crop protection products, organic peroxides, coatings, plastics, rubber compounds and other specialty chemical applications. The additional production capacity is therefore expected to improve BASF’s ability to serve customers as global consumption of these intermediates expands.

The company also expects the modernized facility to enhance long-term supply security and maintain consistent product quality. BASF views these improvements as important for strengthening its role as a reliable supplier of sustainable intermediates.

The Ludwigshafen investment forms part of BASF’s broader strategy to improve the sustainability of its global intermediates operations. The company continues to increase its use of renewable electricity and adopt more sustainable production practices. With higher capacity, improved infrastructure, lower product carbon footprints and stronger supply reliability, the upgraded ACCF facility represents another step in BASF’s efforts to support customers pursuing greener chemical value chains.

Product and Chemical Price Impact

The modernization is likely to have a positive impact on BASF’s acid chlorides and chloroformates business, as the 30% capacity increase should improve availability, supply reliability and BASF’s ability to capture growing demand. In the near term, greater output could place downward pressure on prices of acid chlorides and chloroformates by easing regional supply constraints, particularly in Europe. However, the impact may be limited because demand from pharmaceuticals, agrochemicals, coatings and plastics remains strong.
