Chemetall’s Pinghu site earns Chinese government recognition for switching to 100% renewable electricity, advancing global sustainability goals.
Zhejiang Chemetall Surface Treatment Materials Co., Ltd., the Pinghu facility operated by the Surface Treatment global business unit of BASF’s Coatings division under the Chemetall brand, has earned commendation from the Economic Development and Ecological Environment Bureau at Pinghu Dushan Port, China. This recognition celebrates the site’s outstanding dedication to sustainability and its role as a model for green practices in the chemical industry within the industrial zone.
The Pinghu site, operational since 2022, holds the distinction of being Chemetall’s largest production facility worldwide. It has taken a leading role in promoting low-carbon operations by successfully switching to 100% renewable electricity. This achievement has been made possible through the strategic purchase of green energy and the deployment of a photovoltaic power generation system, including 2,500 square meters of rooftop solar panels. As a result of these initiatives, the site is projected to cut approximately 2,700 tons of carbon emissions by 2025.
This move marks a significant step toward Chemetall’s global objective to power 80% of its operations with renewable electricity by 2025. The Pinghu facility is not only contributing to Chemetall’s internal carbon reduction goals but is also setting an industry benchmark for sustainability practices in the region.
Frank Naber, Senior Vice President of Chemetall, highlighted the importance of this milestone: “We have set ambitious sustainability targets for 2025, and our achievement at Pinghu showcases our firm commitment to a greener future. Being acknowledged by the Pinghu Dushan Port authority reinforces the impact of our sustainability strategy and encourages us to keep pushing forward.”
Echoing this sentiment, Evelyn Shen, Vice President Asia Pacific at Chemetall, stated, “We are honored to be recognized for our clean energy transformation in China. Sustainability is at the core of our operations—from integrating renewable energy sources to innovating eco-friendly surface treatment technologies that support our customers’ environmental goals. We look forward to deepening our contribution to sustainable development across the region.”
Chemetall continues to advance its global environmental agenda by introducing initiatives designed to lower CO2 emissions and improve overall sustainability performance. The company aligns its efforts with BASF and BASF Coatings’ wider sustainability framework.
Beyond China, Chemetall is actively expanding its renewable energy initiatives across the Asia Pacific. Its facility in Singapore is slated to implement solar energy solutions by the end of 2025, while the Melbourne site in Australia has also embraced similar measures. These regional efforts reflect Chemetall’s broader strategy to transform operations worldwide in support of climate-conscious manufacturing and long-term environmental stewardship.
