BASF Mining Solutions is reinforcing its commitment to the growing demand for copper and the mining industry's need for sustainable, resource-efficient processing. As part of a strategic shift, the company is expanding its efforts in copper hydrometallurgy and flotation research and development.
Building on the success of its LixTRA™ product line, BASF plans to accelerate the development of next-generation leaching aids with improved efficiency. The company is integrating its existing leaching research program into its broader surfactant R&D efforts, enhancing collaboration and innovation across teams.
To support this shift, BASF is relocating its global R&D leaching activities from Tucson, Arizona, to its state-of-the-art research facility in Houston, Texas. The consolidation is intended to bring experts together under one roof, encouraging a dynamic environment for knowledge sharing and creativity.
“This synergy is poised to drive innovative solutions that could reshape the landscape of our industry,” said Caren Hoffmann, vice president of BASF Mining Solutions.
In addition to the changes in leaching research, BASF is decentralizing its technical and analytical support for solvent extraction and electrowinning technologies. By moving these capabilities closer to its customers, the company aims to provide more responsive, customized service. Customers using BASF’s LIX® and LixMS™ products can expect improved technical assistance and analytical support tailored to their specific needs.
BASF is also advancing its efforts in flotation technologies, focusing on both sulfidic and non-sulfidic ores. The company continues to invest in the development of high-performance formulations under its well-known brands, including Lupromin®, Luprofroth® and Luproset®. These innovations are designed to significantly enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of mineral processing operations.
“Our commitment is reflected in our ability to harness extensive expertise and utilize our leading-edge laboratories to develop tailored solutions that address the challenges faced by our customers,” said Hendrik Sporys, head of global marketing for BASF Mining Solutions.
These strategic initiatives are part of BASF’s ongoing mission to provide the mining industry with cutting-edge chemical innovations. By aligning its research capabilities and technical support with the evolving needs of its customers, BASF is well-positioned to help shape the future of sustainable mineral processing.
Through innovative products, global field support and leading technical expertise, BASF’s Mining Solutions business delivers sustainable solutions that enhance productivity, metal recovery and operational flexibility across the hydrometallurgical processes of leaching, solvent extraction and flotation.
Mining Solutions is a key segment of BASF’s Performance Chemicals division, which also includes offerings such as plastic additives, oilfield chemicals, and fuel and lubricant solutions. BASF’s advanced technologies serve a broad range of industries, including chemicals, plastics, consumer goods, energy and resources, as well as automotive and transportation.
