BASF launches Ameriflor Calm, a sustainable botanical active, improving sensitive skin resilience, reducing redness, and promoting ethical sourcing practices.
BASF’s Personal Care business has unveiled Ameriflor™ Calm, a botanical active ingredient specifically formulated to enhance the resilience of sensitive skin. With rising global demand for skincare solutions that address irritation and vulnerability, Ameriflor Calm stands out as an innovative product that simultaneously reduces visible redness, minimizes trans-epidermal water loss, and protects the skin from environmental stressors. Sourced from regenerative organic certified farms in Oregon under the oversight of the Regenerative Organic Alliance and produced in the United States at a facility powered entirely by renewable electricity, Ameriflor Calm embodies BASF’s commitment to sustainable, ethical, and environmentally responsible practices.
A Botanical Approach to Sensitive Skin
Sensitive skin affects a substantial portion of the population, impacting approximately 70% of women and 60% of men worldwide. Recognizing this widespread concern, BASF has combined modern scientific methods with traditional botanical knowledge to develop Ameriflor Calm. “In today’s skincare market, consumers increasingly seek transparency and effectiveness. Ameriflor Calm addresses these expectations by reducing the appearance of redness, supporting skin barrier function, and enhancing the skin’s resilience against environmental aggressors,” explains Lucilene Veira-Nunes, Global Business Management, Beauty Care Solutions at BASF.
Ameriflor Calm derives its efficacy from the Self-Heal plant (Prunella vulgaris), a botanically resilient species historically utilized in the skincare practices of Indigenous nations including the Nitassinan, Catawba, Cherokee, and Algonquin-speaking peoples. By integrating traditional knowledge with advanced bioactive extraction techniques, BASF has formulated an ingredient that strengthens sensitive skin while honoring the cultural heritage of these plants.
Clinically Demonstrated Benefits
In clinical studies, participants with sensitive skin applied Ameriflor Calm at a 1% concentration over a 28-day period, with assessments at baseline, 7 days, and 28 days. Results were promising: after just 7 days, skin redness was reduced by 10% compared to an 8% reduction with placebo. Improvements continued over the 28-day study period, and trans-epidermal water loss decreased by 11% after 7 days, demonstrating a measurable enhancement in skin barrier function. These results confirm Ameriflor Calm’s capacity to improve both the appearance and resilience of sensitive skin in a short time frame.
Sustainability and Ethical Sourcing at the Core
Ameriflor Calm aligns with BASF’s Responsibly Active program, emphasizing sustainable and ethically sourced bioactive ingredients. The Self-Heal plants used in this formulation are cultivated on regenerative organic farms in Oregon, fully certified by the Regenerative Organic Alliance, ensuring transparency, traceability, and fair labor practices. Furthermore, the manufacturing site operates on 100% renewable electricity, reducing carbon emissions and supporting BASF’s broader sustainability initiatives. By combining efficacy, ethical sourcing, and environmental stewardship, Ameriflor Calm represents a holistic approach to skincare innovation.
With Ameriflor Calm, BASF provides a scientifically validated, culturally respectful, and environmentally conscious solution for the growing global population with sensitive skin.
