The collaboration focuses on providing innovative washing solutions for PET recycling that meet stringent food industry standards, boosting both the quality and efficiency of the recycling process.
In a significant move set to bolster the circular economy in Southeast Asia, Chemetall, the Surface Treatment global business unit of BASF’s Coatings division, has been chosen as the exclusive supplier of innovative PET recycling washing solutions for Circular Plastics Company’s (CPC) new recycling plant in Vung Tau, Vietnam. This expanded partnership, which builds on a successful collaboration in Myanmar, marks a pivotal step toward elevating the quality and sustainability of plastics recycling in the region.
Amidst a surging demand for recycled plastics in emerging markets, the collaboration between these two industry leaders is a powerful example of how innovation can address critical process challenges and create value within new material cycles. Chemetall is providing a suite of novel technologies specifically tailored for CPC's facilities, which specialize in transforming post-consumer PET plastics into high-quality, food-grade products. This specialized portfolio includes Gardoclean® cleaning agents, as well as Gardobond® additives for PET/polyolefin separation and defoaming.
The integration of these advanced solutions is not merely about a new supplier agreement; it represents a significant leap forward in the efficiency and quality of recycled materials. Chemetall's technologies are designed to substantially improve the quality of treated plastic flakes, boost overall productivity, and reduce energy and resource consumption. A key outcome of this technological integration is CPC's ability to produce washed flakes that fully comply with rigorous food contact standards, a crucial requirement for the production of food-grade recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET).
Evelyn Shen, Vice President of Chemetall Asia Pacific, expressed enthusiasm for the strengthened partnership. “We are excited that our successful collaboration with Circular Plastics Company continues to strengthen, extending from Myanmar to Vietnam,” Shen stated. She emphasized Chemetall’s dedication to supporting its customers in the evolving plastics recycling landscape of Southeast Asia by "offering differentiated PET and plastics recycling solutions and expertise that enhance quality, drive efficiency, and support the positive development of a circular economy.”
Echoing this sentiment, Marc Rudolf von Rohr, Group Chief Operating Officer at Circular Plastics Company, highlighted the value of the partnership. “At CPC, we are committed to producing the highest-quality food-grade rPET, and Chemetall has been an exceptional partner in helping us achieve that goal,” said von Rohr. He added that Chemetall’s advanced wash chemistry not only improves the purity and performance of their recycled materials but also aligns perfectly with CPC’s core values of innovation and environmental responsibility. "We’re proud to work with a global leader like Chemetall whose solutions are as forward-thinking as our vision for circularity in Asia,” he concluded.
