Dimethyl carbonate (DMC) prices in China surged late in August as a tightening upstream and strategic buying ahead of the autumn battery season shifted the balance from muted domestic demand to stronger merchant interest. Early August trading was relatively calm, but by late month the market saw a pronounced rally driven by constrained methanol availability and early battery-electrolyte stockpiling ahead of the September–October peak season. Meanwhile, weak coatings and adhesives offtake and peak-season freight surcharges complicated export economics, leaving suppliers to weigh higher landed costs against firm spot demand from electrolyte makers and traders.
Demand patterns were bifurcated across end markets.
