China LiPF6 Prices Rise 6.73% in Late August on Strong Battery Demand and Tighter Supply

China’s lithium hexafluorophosphate (LiPF6) market strengthened sharply in August after July’s volatility as stronger battery production, firm LFP demand, and tighter lithium-feedstock expectations improved seller sentiment. The market moved from early caution toward firmer spot negotiations as electrolyte producers increased operating rates and restocking interest emerged ahead of the autumn production cycle. China’s battery industry provided a strong demand foundation, with combined power and energy-storage battery output reaching 206.0 GWh in June, up 59.5% year on year, while LFP accounted for a record 83.3% of power-battery installations. Supply-side sentiment was further supported by the one-year postponement of Do-Fluoride’s 100,000 t/y electrolyte-materials project and the continued closure of CATL’s Jianxiawo lithium mine pending environmental approvals. By late August, the market had shifted decisively firmer, although ample electrolyte capacity and cautious buyers remain important constraints. The near-term outlook is constructive but uneven, with September likely to test whether the August rally can be sustained.

In our view, the August recovery reflects a genuine improvement in the underlying supply-demand balance, although it remains too early to characterize the move as a structural shortage.
