Clariant is launching its new AddWorks™ titanium-based catalyst technology for polyester polymerization in 2026.

The global polyester industry is on the cusp of a major transformation with the announcement of Clariant's innovative AddWorks™ titanium-based catalyst solutions. Unveiled ahead of its official launch in 2026, the technology is set to redefine sustainability and efficiency in polyester polymerization, offering a timely solution to environmental pressures and mounting supply chain volatility.

The new catalyst directly challenges the industry's long-standing reliance on antimony. China’s implementation of antimony export controls since 2024 has sent shockwaves through the manufacturing sector, creating significant supply chain uncertainty given the country’s role as a major global supplier of the heavy metal used in traditional catalysts. Clariant's solution offers complete independence from antimony, providing manufacturers with a critical element of supply chain security.

Beyond supply chain resilience, the titanium-based technology brings a powerful suite of sustainability and performance benefits. It acts as a highly effective transesterification/polycondensation catalyst, designed to work across the entire polyester family, including not only PET (polyethylene terephthalate), which is the initial focus, but also PETG, PCT, PBT, PTT, PBAT, TPEE, and emerging polyesters like PEF.

A core advantage is its ability to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of polyester production. The new technology enables lower processing temperatures during polymerization, translating directly into reduced energy consumption and potential OPEX savings. Furthermore, the elimination of heavy metals like antimony, which poses concerns over environmental mobility, toxicity, and bioaccumulation, positions the new polyester as safer for both people and the planet, simplifying PET recycling and supporting the shift toward a more circular economy.

"Our AddWorks titanium-based catalyst technology marks an important shift in polyester manufacturing," stated Mariano Suarez, Head of Marketing Additives at Clariant. "By enabling lower processing temperatures and eliminating heavy metals from the production process, we are helping our customers achieve their sustainability goals while simultaneously improving their operational efficiency and product quality."

The performance enhancements are equally compelling. The technology offers a kinetic boosting effect, which translates to improved color value, superior product quality, and enhanced production efficiency. Clariant’s proprietary water-stable formulation ensures consistent catalytic activity without the risk of deactivation or unwanted by-products, leading to reliable polymer quality, higher productivity, reduced downtime, and smoother production runs—all contributing to potential CAPEX and OPEX savings.

This innovation is particularly valuable for polyester resin manufacturers, fiber producers, PET recyclers, and technology licensors looking to differentiate their products in a market that is rapidly prioritizing sustainable and heavy metal-free materials.
