ClorDiSys Solutions Inc has announced the groundbreaking receipt of U.S. Patent No. 12,201,738 B2, titled "System for converting existing ethylene oxide vacuum sterilizers to a chlorine dioxide vacuum sterilizer." This innovative technology promises to accelerate the adoption of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) gas sterilization within the medical device industry by enabling the conversion of existing ethylene oxide (EO) sterilization chambers.

For decades, ethylene oxide has been a workhorse in medical device sterilization, responsible for sterilizing approximately half of the world's medical devices. However, recent findings classifying EO as a carcinogen have led to intense regulatory scrutiny concerning its health and environmental impact on surrounding communities. This increased scrutiny has resulted in lawsuits and facility closures, causing a critical reduction in sterilization capacity and raising concerns about potential medical device shortages.

Chlorine dioxide gas has emerged as a compelling alternative to EO, offering several significant advantages. Unlike EO, ClO2 is non-carcinogenic, non-explosive at use concentrations, and leaves behind no harmful residuals. As a true gas, ClO2 exhibits superior penetration capabilities, effectively reaching intricate device geometries and filling the sterilization chamber uniformly, unlike vapor-based methods that can condense on surfaces and limit access. Furthermore, ClO2 sterilization occurs at ambient temperatures, broadening the compatibility to a wider range of temperature-sensitive medical devices. Notably, the non-explosive nature of ClO2 allows for the sterilization of devices containing embedded batteries, a limitation often encountered with EO sterilization, thereby fostering greater innovation in medical device design.

Despite its clear advantages, the widespread adoption of ClO2 sterilization has been hindered by the limited existing infrastructure. In contrast, a substantial installed base of EO sterilizers exists globally. ClorDiSys's newly patented conversion system directly addresses this challenge by providing a pathway to repurpose existing EO chambers for ClO2 sterilization. This ingenious solution circumvents the need for entirely new capital investments in ClO2-specific sterilization chambers, making the transition more economically feasible and logistically simpler for sterilization facilities.

ClorDiSys utilizes its proprietary Pure CD sterilization method, originally developed by Johnson & Johnson. This EPA-registered sterilant produces a non-acidic ClO2 gas that is gentle on a wide array of materials, ensuring the integrity and functionality of the sterilized medical devices. Established in 2001 and registered with the FDA as a contract sterilization facility and manufacturer of sterilization chambers, ClorDiSys is uniquely positioned to drive the adoption of this transformative technology.

The ability to convert existing EO chambers to ClO2 represents a significant step forward in ensuring a robust and environmentally responsible medical device sterilization landscape.
