CNG, NOVA Chemicals Partner to Advance Recycled Polyethylene in Packaging

CNG and NOVA Chemicals partner to commercialize recycled polyethylene, advancing sustainable flexible packaging, circularity, supply chain resilience, and lower-carbon solutions.

Charter Next Generation (CNG), a recognized leader in sustainable material science, has entered into a long-term strategic collaboration with NOVA Chemicals to accelerate the commercialization of recycled polyethylene (rPE) for advanced flexible packaging. This initiative strengthens CNG’s focus on innovation, circularity, and reducing environmental impact, while supporting the transition toward a lower-carbon future.

Under this agreement, CNG will source rPE resin marketed under NOVA Chemicals’ SYNDIGO™ brand. Derived from post-consumer recycled (PCR) materials—such as used films and plastic packaging—the resin serves as a more sustainable alternative to virgin polyethylene. By integrating SYNDIGO™ into its operations, CNG is expanding its ability to deliver circular packaging solutions at scale.

John Garnett, Senior Vice President of Technical, Sustainability, and Innovation at CNG, highlighted the importance of this development. He explained that incorporating PCR materials into mainstream packaging not only reduces reliance on virgin plastic but also cuts greenhouse gas emissions and supports stronger markets for recycled plastics. Garnett noted that this collaboration allows CNG to provide high-performance specialty films and packaging solutions while aligning with global sustainability objectives.

The initiative complements CNG’s GreenArrow™ portfolio, which already includes recycle-ready, recycled-content, compostable, and low-carbon product options. Applications for these new rPE-based films span across everyday consumer packaging, including cereal bags, shrink wrap, and household overwrap for items like napkins and paper towels. By meeting both performance and environmental benchmarks, these materials provide brand owners and retailers with practical pathways to achieve ambitious sustainability commitments.

Echoing these sentiments, Greg DeKunder, Vice President of NOVA Chemicals’ Circular Solutions, emphasized the shared values driving this partnership. He explained that the combination of NOVA Chemicals’ advanced resin technology and CNG’s manufacturing expertise creates a powerful synergy to boost PCR adoption in flexible packaging. The collaboration unites two strong brands—SYNDIGO™ and GreenArrow™—under a common mission to expand the circular economy.

The regional supply chain adds further strength to this agreement. CNG’s operations in Wisconsin and Ohio align strategically with NOVA Chemicals’ new recycling facility in Connersville, Indiana. Launched in early 2025, the facility is capable of producing over 110 million pounds of rPE annually, positioning it among the largest and most advanced plastic film recycling sites in North America.

Eric Smith, Chief Procurement Officer at CNG, underscored the broader benefits of this initiative, noting that customers will gain access to reliable, regionally sourced PCR materials. This approach not only enhances film performance and supply chain resilience but also directly contributes to environmental progress.

As part of its long-term vision, CNG remains committed to industry leadership in sustainable manufacturing. With more than 2,600 employee-owners and a strong alignment with initiatives like Ownership Works™, the company continues to invest in innovative materials and circular solutions designed to create lasting environmental and societal value—truly fulfilling its mission of Enhancing Lives for a Better World.
