Covestro opened a new TPU development center in Guangzhou to accelerate innovation, customer collaboration, and sustainable material solutions across Asia-Pacific.
Covestro has officially inaugurated a new Thermoplastic Polyurethanes (TPU) Application Development Center in Guangzhou, China, marking another important step in the company’s long-term growth strategy across the Asia-Pacific region. The new facility is designed to strengthen Covestro’s innovation capabilities and bring advanced material development closer to customers operating in some of the world’s fastest-growing industrial sectors.
The Guangzhou-based center complements Covestro’s expanding TPU footprint in China, alongside its large-scale TPU manufacturing facility in Zhuhai and the company’s regional research and development center in Changhua. The Zhuhai site, which recently commenced operations, is expected to become Covestro’s largest TPU production hub globally. Together, the three facilities create an integrated ecosystem that combines research, application development, customer collaboration, and industrial-scale manufacturing under one strategic network.
Demand for TPU materials continues to rise significantly across Asia-Pacific, especially in South China, where industries such as consumer electronics, automotive manufacturing, specialty films, and advanced mobility solutions are rapidly expanding. The newly launched Application Development Center is intended to help Covestro respond more effectively to these market trends by enabling closer cooperation with customers and accelerating the development of customized material solutions.
According to Andrea Maier-Richter, the center represents a key pillar of Covestro’s global TPU strategy aimed at strengthening its position in high-value and emerging market segments across Asia-Pacific. She emphasized that the facility will support the exploration, testing, and scaling of new TPU applications in sectors including robotics, healthcare technologies, and future mobility solutions. By working directly with customers near key manufacturing hubs, Covestro intends to speed up innovation cycles and improve product commercialization.
The Guangzhou center has been specifically designed to improve development efficiency and shorten product launch timelines. It includes advanced processing simulation lines capable of replicating real-world manufacturing conditions for extrusion and injection molding applications. These systems allow engineers and customers to quickly adjust formulations, test material modifications, and optimize product performance with greater precision. As a result, customers can reduce testing cycles, lower development costs, and accelerate time-to-market for new products.
Holly Lei highlighted that Asia hosts some of the world’s most dynamic and rapidly evolving industries, where customers expect suppliers to deliver both speed and innovation. She noted that the new center reflects Covestro’s commitment to remaining close to its customers and providing integrated technical expertise directly within the South China market. The facility also demonstrates the company’s confidence in the region’s long-term industrial growth and innovation potential.
One of the most distinctive aspects of the Guangzhou Application Development Center is its integrated multi-business structure. Teams from Covestro’s Engineering Plastics (EP) and Specialty Films (SF) businesses are co-located within the same facility, enabling stronger cross-functional collaboration and faster development processes. The Engineering Plastics division contributes expertise in compounding technologies and color matching solutions, particularly for industries such as consumer electronics, footwear, and paint protection films. Meanwhile, the Specialty Films unit supports pilot production and product commissioning for high-performance film applications and extrusion-based solutions.
Christian Haessler stated that Covestro’s innovation strategy is strongly driven by customer needs and cross-business collaboration. He added that TPU materials can play a major role in supporting a more sustainable future due to their versatility and recyclability. The Guangzhou center is expected to accelerate the development of sustainable TPU solutions while leveraging one of the world’s most active industrial innovation ecosystems.
The new Application Development Center is now fully operational and open to customers and partners throughout Asia-Pacific. It offers comprehensive support services ranging from material consultation and application development to pilot-scale production and technical troubleshooting, further strengthening Covestro’s position in the regional TPU market.
