Tricalcium Phosphate prices have shot through the roof this month, posing huge challenges to industries that rely on this vital mineral compound. Product prices are said to have risen by almost 30% since late March, one of the sharpest monthly price increases in recent years, according to market analysts.

The sudden price hike has largely been blamed by industry analysts on extreme supply chain disruptions in China, the global leader in Tricalcium Phosphate production. The supply chain across the world is experiencing unprecedented pressure. With availability still contracting, increased manufacturing costs are now being felt by industries that produce all over the world.

Chinese ports, such as Shanghai and Ningbo, are presently plagued by severe congestion, greatly hindering shipments. Heavy trade volumes have overwhelmed these terminals, leaving ships waiting days to dock. These delays have a direct effect on Tricalcium Phosphate distribution channels, leading to shortages in major markets.

Inclement weather conditions also add to the Tricalcium Phosphate crisis. Torrential rains, unusual typhoons, and temperature changes interfere with transportation networks throughout China. Flooding has destroyed roads critical to transporting Tricalcium Phosphate from production plants to ports, while storms have suspended maritime shipping activities temporarily.

Such a perfect storm on supply chains has never before been seen. While production levels are being held at stable positions, the shipment of Tricalcium Phosphate to overseas markets is being confronted with great challenges.

The coming Labor Day holiday in China will exacerbate the Tricalcium Phosphate shortage. From May 1st, Chinese manufacturing facilities and logistics centers will shut down for a temporary period, leading to further backlogs in Tricalcium Phosphate manufacturing and shipments. Industry analysts foresee this shutdown continuing to prolong existing price pressure at least until mid-May.

Shortages of raw materials also push prices higher. Phosphoric acid, which is an important input in the manufacturing of Tricalcium Phosphate, has its own supply shortages. Producers cite varying availability of upstream yellow phosphorus, compelling them to vary production levels accordingly.

European importers feel these disruptions acutely. Germany, heavily dependent on Chinese Tricalcium Phosphate for its food, pharmaceutical, and manufacturing sectors, now confronts rising costs across these industries. Companies using Tricalcium Phosphate as a critical ingredient have already announced potential price increases for consumer products.

The analysts expect Tricalcium Phosphate prices to stay high all the way through Q2 2025. Relief could come only when Chinese port backlog diminishes, and weather stabilizes. Yet some industry insiders believe that this disruption can spur manufacturers into diversifying their Tricalcium Phosphate sourcing outside China for establishing more secure supply chains.
