DuPont and ChildFund launch Kenya water plant, improving safe water access, reducing fluoride risks, and benefiting 20,000 people sustainably.

In connection with World Water Day 2026, DuPont marked a significant milestone by inaugurating a new multi-technology water treatment facility in Baringo County. This initiative is transforming access to safe drinking water for residents of Kampi Ya Samaki, a rural community that, until now, had no dependable source of clean and potable water. The project represents a major step forward in addressing long-standing water quality issues in the region.

The facility has been implemented through DuPont’s longstanding collaboration with ChildFund International. It integrates advanced water purification technologies, including DuPont™ IntegraTec™ ultrafiltration modules and DuPont™ FilmTec™ reverse osmosis elements. These technologies, combined with DuPont’s technical expertise, are designed to effectively remove fluoride and other harmful contaminants from local water sources, ensuring a consistent and safe supply of drinking water for the community.

For decades, residents in the area depended on untreated water drawn from Lake Baringo, which contains fluoride levels exceeding limits established by the World Health Organization. This prolonged exposure has led to widespread cases of dental fluorosis and increased risks of skeletal fluorosis, posing serious health challenges across generations. By introducing modern filtration systems, the project directly addresses these issues, significantly improving water safety and overall public health outcomes.

Beyond serving Kampi Ya Samaki, the initiative is designed to reach a broader population through an expanded distribution system. The network is expected to benefit up to 20,000 individuals, supplying clean water to approximately 1,500 households, three schools, and a healthcare facility. This expanded reach highlights the project’s potential to create meaningful and lasting impact across the region.

The success of this initiative is rooted in strong collaboration among multiple stakeholders. Key partners include the County Government of Baringo, the Central Rift Valley Water Works Development Agency, Davis & Shirtliff, Hand in Hand Eastern Africa, and the Central Rift Community Development Program. This coordinated approach ensures alignment with regional development goals, public health priorities, and long-term water resource planning.

DuPont Water Solutions, alongside ChildFund and its partners, has been working to create scalable and sustainable models for improving water access in underserved communities across Kenya and Zambia. These projects leverage advanced purification technologies to tackle challenges such as iron bacteria, turbidity, and discoloration in water supplies, all while emphasizing community-led management and sustainability.

According to Alex Lane, Regional Commercial Director for DuPont Water Solutions in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa, the partnership demonstrates how cutting-edge water treatment technologies, when combined with technical know-how and a clear purpose, can deliver durable and locally relevant solutions. He emphasized the importance of designing systems that are both resilient and tailored to community needs.

Alex Mucheru, who led the project for DuPont Water Solutions, highlighted the broader social and economic benefits of improved water access. These include better health outcomes, reduced healthcare costs, and increased school attendance—particularly benefiting women and girls. He also noted that the project provides a replicable and scalable model that can be deployed in other communities facing similar challenges.

Erin Kennedy of ChildFund underscored the importance of partnerships in delivering impactful solutions at scale. She described the Baringo project as a powerful example of how shared expertise and coordinated investment can transform persistent public health challenges into sustainable, community-driven outcomes.

Globally, DuPont Water Solutions technologies are making a substantial impact, currently helping to purify more than 50 million gallons of water every minute across 112 countries, reinforcing the company’s commitment to expanding access to safe and reliable water worldwide.
