Eastman Unveils Esmeri CC1N10, a Sustainable Breakthrough for Color Cosmetics

William Faulkner 13-Jun-2025

Eastman, a global leader in specialty materials, has introduced Esmeri™ CC1N10—a high-performance, sustainable cellulose ester micropowder designed for color cosmetics. Developed to meet the growing demand for eco-friendly beauty products, Esmeri CC1N10 is both effective and environmentally responsible.

Derived from sustainably managed forests, Esmeri CC1N10 offers a readily biodegradable* alternative to traditional synthetic polymer microparticles. The new ingredient is engineered to comply with the European Commission’s Regulation (EU) 2023/2055, which targets the reduction of microplastics in the environment. By aligning with the European Union’s Zero Pollution Action Plan, Eastman aims to contribute to a 30% reduction in microplastic emissions by 2030.

Esmeri CC1N10 delivers advanced performance benefits without compromising sustainability. The micropowder enhances visual appeal through a soft-focus optical effect, increases color intensity and payoff, and ensures smooth, even coverage. It is particularly well-suited for lipsticks, foundations and pressed powders. Its compatibility with lipophilic formulations makes it a viable, eco-conscious substitute for conventional microparticles used in cosmetic applications.

"Cosmetic brands must evolve to meet future regulatory standards and growing consumer expectations for sustainable, high-performing products," said Travis Smith, executive vice president at Eastman. "We’re excited to support formulators in creating products that stand out in a competitive market while remaining compliant and environmentally conscious."

Esmeri CC1N10’s unique properties enable it to scatter light effectively and fill in fine lines and wrinkles, enhancing the overall finish of cosmetic products. In lipsticks, it provides improved color intensity and smoother, more even application. Liquid foundations benefit from a mattifying, soft-focus effect that blurs imperfections. Pressed powders gain optimal compaction and texture, contributing to a photo-ready finish.

Manufactured using 63% sustainably sourced wood pulp, Esmeri CC1N10 is non-nano in size and freshwater readily biodegradable. It is certified by the Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification (PEFC™) and the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC®), further underscoring Eastman’s commitment to responsible sourcing and sustainability.

"Esmeri represents Eastman’s innovation at the intersection of sustainability and performance," said Chris Killian, senior vice president and chief technology and sustainability officer at Eastman. "This launch is part of our broader effort to advance circularity and develop high-performing materials that benefit both people and the planet."

Esmeri CC1N10 was recently showcased at in-cosmetics Global in Amsterdam and NYSCC Suppliers’ Day in New York, where it attracted interest from formulators seeking next-generation solutions in sustainable beauty.
