Epsilon Carbon commissions a 300,000 TPA Karnataka facility, doubling capacity and strengthening India’s specialty carbon supply chain for global industries.

Epsilon Carbon has commissioned a new 300,000-tonne-per-annum (TPA) specialty carbon manufacturing facility in Vijayanagar, Karnataka, marking a major expansion of its production capabilities. The commissioning doubles the company’s overall specialty carbon capacity to 600,000 TPA, strengthening its position among India’s leading specialty carbon producers.

The new facility has been developed using Industry 4.0 principles, incorporating advanced process control systems, digital automation, and modern manufacturing technologies. These capabilities are designed to improve operational efficiency, maintain consistent product quality, optimize resource utilization, and support reliable production at scale.

The Karnataka facility will manufacture a range of specialty carbon and downstream products, including coal tar pitch, naphthalene, anthracene oil, and creosote oil. These materials serve as important feedstocks and inputs for several industries, including aluminum, steel, pharmaceuticals, and advanced materials. The additional capacity is expected to enhance the availability of these products for both domestic consumers and international customers.

According to Gaurav Mathur, Chief Executive Officer of Epsilon Carbon, the expansion reflects India’s growing potential to become a reliable global supplier of specialty carbon materials. He highlighted that the company’s increased capacity will support supply chain resilience, particularly for the international aluminum industry, as manufacturers and consumers seek greater geographic diversification in sourcing.

Epsilon Carbon is also pursuing an ambitious long-term expansion strategy. The company plans to develop an Integrated Carbon Complex in Jharsuguda, Odisha, which is expected to help increase its specialty carbon production capacity to 1 million TPA by 2029.

The planned complex incorporates several sustainability-focused technologies. Its Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) system is designed to enable the reuse of 100% of treated wastewater, reducing freshwater consumption and liquid waste generation. In addition, a 17 MW captive power plant will utilize recovered waste gases to generate electricity. This approach is expected to support energy self-sufficiency while lowering the facility’s carbon footprint.

The company’s focus on responsible manufacturing is further supported by certifications and sustainability recognitions, including Responsible Care®, EcoVadis Silver Rating, and SA8000. These certifications reflect its focus on environmental management, workplace safety, social responsibility, and operational standards.

With the new Karnataka facility and its planned Odisha expansion, Epsilon Carbon is positioning itself to meet rising demand for specialty carbon materials while strengthening India’s participation in global industrial supply chains.

Impact on Products and Chemical Commodity Prices

The commissioning is likely to increase the domestic availability of coal tar pitch, naphthalene, anthracene oil, and creosote oil, potentially easing supply constraints and limiting upward price pressure in the near term. Higher production capacity could improve supply reliability for aluminum, steel, pharmaceutical, and advanced-material manufacturers. However, the actual price impact will depend on demand growth, feedstock availability, export volumes, and competing producers’ output. Coal tar pitch prices could face moderate pressure if the additional supply exceeds domestic demand, while naphthalene and related aromatic products may also see greater price stability. Strong export demand could absorb the incremental capacity and reduce the potential for price declines.
