Evonik expands POLYVEST® production in Shanghai to improve supply reliability, customer proximity, and meet rising demand in Asia’s markets.
Evonik has announced a significant step toward strengthening its presence in the Asian market by localizing the final production stage of its silane-functionalized polybutadiene product, POLYVEST® ST-E 60, at its Shanghai facility in China. This move represents a strategic decision aimed at increasing supply security and improving responsiveness to customer needs in the fast-growing Asian region. The expanded production capacity is expected to be fully operational by the third quarter of 2025.
This development marks a milestone for Evonik’s specialty chemicals business, as it aligns with the company’s long-term vision of building resilient, regional supply chains and improving service delivery through local production. By bringing manufacturing processes closer to customers, Evonik aims to reduce delivery times, minimize potential supply disruptions, and enhance customer satisfaction across multiple industries that rely on POLYVEST®.
POLYVEST® ST-E 60 is a silane-terminated polybutadiene, widely used as a high-performance additive in a variety of applications such as rubber compounding, tires, adhesives, sealants, and coatings. Its silane-functionalized chemistry and rubber-based composition allow it to integrate effectively into the rubber matrix of tire treads, improving adhesion, elasticity, and durability. As demand continues to grow for advanced materials in automotive, industrial, and construction sectors, Evonik’s expansion ensures a steady and reliable supply of this essential product.
“This strategic investment will enhance our production capabilities and ensure that our customers in Asia benefit from improved supply security and shorter lead times,” stated Dr. Anna Maria Ickert, Head of Evonik Coating & Adhesive Resins. “In today’s dynamic global environment, it is critical to build independent supply chains and ensure that we remain agile and responsive to customer requirements.”
Dr. Jürgen Herwig, Head of the polybutadienes and specialty acrylics business within the same division, added, “This expansion supports our global strategy of sustainable and regional growth. Establishing additional capacity in Asia not only reinforces our operational excellence but also allows our customers to thrive in an increasingly competitive marketplace.”
In addition to supply chain benefits, this expansion reflects Evonik’s broader sustainability and innovation goals. Localizing production reduces the environmental footprint associated with long-distance shipping and enables more efficient resource management. The company continues to prioritize sustainability, quality, and customer focus across all of its business segments.
As Asia remains a key growth market for specialty chemicals, this move strengthens Evonik’s role as a trusted supplier and innovation leader. With expanded capacity and localized production, Evonik is well-positioned to meet evolving customer demands and contribute to the long-term development of the regional chemical industry.
