Evonik doubles long-chain polyamides capacity in China, enhancing supply resilience and supporting growing demand from automotive and consumer goods sectors.

Evonik has achieved a major milestone in its strategic growth initiative in Asia with the successful trial production of a second polyamides reactor at its Shanghai facility. This development marks a crucial advancement in Evonik’s plan to double its production capacity for long-chain polyamides in the region, solidifying its leadership in high-performance polymer materials.

According to the company, this expansion demonstrates Evonik’s strong confidence in the Chinese market and underscores its commitment to localizing high-performance material production to meet the evolving needs of customers. “The second polyamides reactor project marks a significant step in expanding our high-performance polyamides capacity in China. This investment reflects our confidence in the Chinese market and will enable us to better meet the growing demand for high-performance polymers from local customers, reinforcing our position as a key partner in industries such as automotive and consumer goods,” said Elaine Wu, Senior Vice President and Head of Evonik’s Advanced Technologies Segment in Asia Pacific.

Evonik’s long-chain polyamides are high-performance materials widely used across multiple industries due to their superior strength, chemical resistance, and lightweight properties. They play a vital role in modern automotive manufacturing—particularly in the development of lightweight components and advanced thermal management systems for new energy vehicles (NEVs)—as well as in energy storage technologies and premium consumer products.

With this expansion, Evonik will also scale up the local production of advanced polymer materials such as AABB polyamides and polyether block amide (PEBA) elastomers. These materials are integral to diverse applications including automotive tubing systems, industrial monofilaments, and the midsoles and outsoles of high-performance athletic footwear. As global demand for electric vehicles, sports equipment, and high-quality consumer goods continues to rise, the consumption of these materials is projected to grow steadily.

Dr. Jan-Olaf Barth, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Evonik’s High-Performance Polymers business line, highlighted the strategic importance of the expansion. “This latest investment is based on our expectation of attractive growth in demand for long-chain polyamides, driven by multiple applications. The new production capacity will greatly enhance the resilience of our global supply chain, allowing us to respond more quickly and flexibly to customer needs in the Asia-Pacific region and provide them with superior and innovative solutions,” he said.

Through this capacity expansion, Evonik aims to not only boost its production efficiency but also strengthen its technological leadership and market responsiveness. The project aligns with the company’s long-term strategy to enhance its footprint in Asia, ensuring that Evonik remains a trusted and innovative supplier of sustainable, high-performance polymer solutions for the future.
