Evonik expands epoxy portfolio with fast-curing Ancamine® 2868 and 2844, enabling high-performance coatings under harsh temperature and humidity conditions.
Evonik has expanded its portfolio of epoxy curing agents in the Americas, introducing two advanced solutions—Ancamine® 2868 and Ancamine® 2844—to help formulators tackle demanding environmental and operational conditions. These products are specifically engineered to enhance performance in protective, marine, and industrial coatings where rapid curing, efficiency, and durability are critical, particularly under challenging temperature and humidity scenarios.
Ancamine® 2868 is a specially modified cyclic polyamine that serves as a highly effective crosslinkable accelerator for epoxy systems. When combined with curing agents such as polyamides, amidoamines, and cycloaliphatic amines, it significantly speeds up the curing process, especially in thin-film applications. Despite the accelerated cure, it preserves essential coating properties including surface finish, corrosion resistance, and barrier protection. This balance between speed and performance allows formulators to optimize epoxy systems without compromising quality. Additionally, its flexibility enables manufacturers to fine-tune formulations based on specific application needs, making it a valuable component in industrial maintenance, protective coatings, and infrastructure projects where minimizing downtime is essential.
According to Evonik, coating applications exposed to fluctuating temperatures and humidity often require trade-offs between curing speed, visual quality, and long-term durability. With Ancamine® 2868, the company aims to eliminate these compromises by offering a solution that combines rapid curing with strong environmental, health, and safety (EH&S) credentials. When used alongside existing technologies like Ancamine® 2844, it provides a broader toolkit for customers to address real-world coating challenges while improving productivity and sustainability.
Ancamine® 2844 complements this offering as a high-performance, ultra-fast curing aliphatic amine hardener designed for plural component spray systems. It is particularly effective in low-temperature environments, capable of delivering reliable curing and rapid development of coating properties even at temperatures as low as 5°C. This makes it especially useful for cold-weather and winter applications, where maintaining coating performance is often difficult. In addition to fast curing, it offers excellent surface aesthetics, strong chemical resistance, and long-term protection against corrosion.
The product also demonstrates outstanding resistance to carbamation in cold and humid conditions, ensuring consistent performance in adverse environments. Its strong adhesion properties and ability to withstand chemicals and corrosion—including up to 3,000 hours in salt spray testing—make it ideal for protective coatings that require durability and minimal maintenance. These characteristics are particularly beneficial in applications where operational downtime must be reduced to a minimum.
From a technical standpoint, achieving fast curing at low temperatures without sacrificing durability or protective qualities is a complex challenge. Evonik highlights that Ancamine® 2844 performs effectively as a standalone hardener, while Ancamine® 2868 enhances formulation adaptability as an accelerator. Together, they provide formulators with the flexibility to design high-performance epoxy systems tailored to specific environmental and operational requirements.
These innovations will be presented at the American Coatings Show, where Evonik will showcase its broader epoxy solutions portfolio. The launch underscores the company’s focus on delivering high-performance, productivity-driven coating technologies that meet the evolving demands of seasonal conditions, climate variability, and regulatory standards in the Americas.
