Evonik Introduces AERODISP Dispersions to Improve Inkjet Coating Performance

William Faulkner 14-May-2025

Evonik Coating Additives has launched a new portfolio of particle dispersions under its AERODISP® brand to enhance the performance of waterborne inkjet ink receptive coatings. The four newly introduced dispersions are based on either silica (SiO2) or alumina (Al2O3) particles and are engineered to improve dot sharpness and image resolution in digital printing applications.

As the printing industry continues its shift from analog to digital methods, achieving high-resolution output remains a priority—particularly for waterborne inkjet inks. A critical factor in producing quality prints is controlling how the ink spreads and adheres to the substrate. Evonik's new AERODISP® dispersions address this challenge by improving the fixation and definition of ink droplets on inkjet primers.

“These coatings play a crucial role in determining print quality,” said Susanne Struck, global head of the market segment inks at Evonik Coating Additives. “Working closely with our customers, we’ve found that substrates—especially when formulated with our AERODISP® dispersions—can make a significant difference in delivering sharper and more vibrant prints.”

The dispersions are easy to incorporate into formulations through simple stirring and are compatible with a wide variety of binders. To support different market needs, the product line includes both anionic and cationic grades. This allows formulators to select the optimal dispersion based on the charge compatibility of their binder systems and the intended application.

Two of the new dispersions are anionic, making them ideal for use in food packaging and decorative printing applications, where compatibility with non-ionic and anionic binders is essential. The other two are cationic, offering strong performance in formulations intended for textile inks, which typically rely on non-ionic or cationic binder systems.

The new AERODISP® dispersions include:

             AERODISP® WR 8520 – Anionic, SiO2-based

             AERODISP® W 7520 WF – Anionic, SiO2-based with excellent food contact status

             AERODISP® WK 7330 – Cationic, SiO2-based

             AERODISP® W 630 – Cationic, Al2O3-based with high transparency
