Evonik has transitioned its global epoxy curing agent production to 100% renewable electricity, significantly reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions and meeting customer demand for sustainable solutions.
Evonik, a global leader in specialty chemicals, has announced a significant leap forward in its sustainability initiatives, transitioning all its epoxy curing agent production plants under the Crosslinkers business line to operate on 100% renewable electricity. This strategic shift encompasses facilities in Marl, Germany; Clayton, U.K.; Isehara, Japan; Los Angeles, USA; and Singapore, underscoring the company's commitment to environmental stewardship on a global scale.
The move is projected to achieve an approximate one-third annual reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions from these facilities. This substantial decrease directly contributes to Evonik's ambitious sustainability strategy, which targets a 25% reduction in these emissions by 2030 and aims for complete climate neutrality by 2050.
Tobias Winkler, Global Sustainability Manager, Evonik Crosslinkers, emphasized the strategic importance of this transition. "This decision to use green electricity for the production of our epoxy curing agents globally is another strong step in our sustainability journey," Winkler stated. "By transitioning to renewable energy sources, we are not only reducing carbon emissions but also paving the way for innovative practices that align with our long-term climate goals." His remarks underscore the dual benefit of this initiative: immediate environmental impact and a foundational shift towards future sustainable operations.
This latest endeavor builds upon Evonik's existing robust commitment to integrating green electricity and sustainable energy sourcing across its operations. Earlier this year, the Crosslinkers business line had already begun to secure renewable energy through a combination of trading green electricity certificates and establishing direct renewable electricity supply agreements. These foundational efforts paved the way for the complete conversion of all epoxy curing agent production sites to green electricity, demonstrating a methodical and comprehensive approach to energy transition.
Epoxy curing agents are vital raw materials with broad applications across various industries. They are indispensable components in the coatings and construction sectors, contributing to the durability and performance of numerous products. Furthermore, these agents are widely utilized in the manufacturing of high-performance composite materials and adhesives, demonstrating their critical role in advanced industrial applications.
Evonik's transition to renewable electricity for its epoxy curing agent production is a testament to its ongoing dedication to sustainable practices. It not only aligns with global efforts to combat climate change but also positions the company as a leader in providing environmentally conscious solutions to its diverse customer base, reinforcing its commitment to a greener future.
