Evonik switches POLYVEST production in Marl to green electricity, advancing sustainability goals and reducing CO2 emissions across its operations.

As of July 1, 2025, Evonik’s Coating & Adhesive Resins business line has transitioned to using green electricity for the production of its POLYVEST® product line at its Marl, Germany site. This strategic move aligns with Evonik’s broader sustainability agenda and supports the company’s commitment to environmental responsibility. Specifically, the initiative contributes to Evonik’s goal of reducing its Scope 1 and Scope 2 greenhouse gas emissions by 25% between 2021 and 2030. This target forms part of the company’s long-term climate strategy, which aims to advance progress toward Net Zero emissions.

Saskia Jaworski, Sustainability Business Manager for POLYVEST®, emphasized the environmental significance of this transition. “We are excited to help our customers make their products more sustainable on the path to Net Zero,” she stated. “For us, a reduced CO2 footprint is a true added value for the product.” According to Jaworski, this step is not just about internal efficiency but also about creating meaningful impact for downstream users seeking environmentally conscious solutions.

The move to green electricity affects both of the production facilities dedicated to POLYVEST® in Marl. This change is part of a series of ongoing sustainability improvements within the POLYVEST® portfolio. Over the past few years, all POLYVEST® grades have been progressively launched in the market as "eCO" versions. These eCO variants are certified as mass-balanced products under the ISCC Plus certification scheme, a globally recognized standard that ensures transparency and traceability for sustainable raw materials across complex supply chains.

In parallel with this transition, Evonik is expanding its green energy efforts company-wide. Starting in 2025, the company is set to activate a number of Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs), further solidifying its commitment to sourcing energy sustainably. These PPAs will play a key role in reducing reliance on fossil fuels while supporting renewable energy generation.

POLYVEST® itself is a versatile range of liquid polybutadienes, available in various chemical structures. Known for their distinctive microstructure, all grades in the POLYVEST® family demonstrate high reactivity, making them ideal for diverse applications. These include critical uses in sectors such as automotive manufacturing, construction materials, and electronic components. The shift to renewable energy in the production process further enhances the environmental profile of these high-performance materials.

By implementing green electricity in its POLYVEST® production, Evonik not only reduces emissions but also reinforces its position as a sustainability-driven leader in specialty chemicals. The initiative underscores the company’s dual focus on innovation and environmental stewardship, ensuring that both current and future product lines meet evolving industry expectations for sustainable manufacturing.
