Evonik launches advanced PEEK material offering superior performance, durability, and efficiency for high-temperature, high-pressure slide bearing applications without fluoropolymers.
Evonik has introduced an advanced tribological material specifically engineered for demanding slide bearing applications that operate under extreme temperatures and high-pressure conditions. This innovative material is based on PEEK (polyether ether ketone), a high-performance polymer known for its durability and resistance to harsh environments. The newly launched product, VESTAKEEP® Easy Slide 2, is designed to offer flexibility in its application. It can be utilized either as a polymer coating in hybrid bearing systems or as a fully PEEK-based bearing component, depending on the specific operational requirements. While the material is best suited for processing through injection molding, it can also be manufactured using extrusion techniques, providing versatility in production methods.
According to Christopher Studte, who leads the Industrial PEEK segment within Evonik’s High Performance Polymers division, this launch aligns with the company’s broader strategy to expand the scope of tribological applications for its PEEK-based materials. He emphasized that the company is actively collaborating with customers across various sectors, including industrial manufacturing, medical technology, and robotics, to address complex engineering challenges. The development of VESTAKEEP® Easy Slide 2 reflects Evonik’s commitment to innovation and customer-centric solutions in high-performance materials.
One of the distinguishing features of VESTAKEEP® Easy Slide 2 is that it is manufactured without the intentional inclusion of fluoropolymers such as PTFE (polytetrafluoroethylene). Traditionally, fluoropolymers are added to polymer-based bearings to enhance their tribological performance. However, Evonik has engineered this material to deliver excellent performance without relying on such additives, marking a significant advancement in material science.
Philipp Kilian, the Program Manager for PEEK research and development at Evonik, highlighted that extensive testing has demonstrated the superior tribological performance of VESTAKEEP® Easy Slide 2. The material shows exceptional resistance to wear, even under conditions involving high temperature, pressure, and sliding velocity. Comparative testing indicates that it outperforms many existing polymer-based bearing materials currently available in the market. Furthermore, it has shown remarkable results not only against other polymer bearings but also when compared to conventional metal bearings. These tests included both dry-running and lubricated conditions across a wide range of temperatures, reinforcing its reliability and adaptability.
In addition to its performance advantages, VESTAKEEP® Easy Slide 2 offers several practical benefits for end users. Its lightweight nature contributes to improved energy efficiency in mechanical systems, while its inherent noise-dampening properties enhance operational comfort and reduce vibration. The material is well-suited for use in slide bearings, thrust washers, and sealing applications, particularly in environments where conventional materials may struggle to perform effectively.
Another key advantage lies in its compatibility with injection molding processes. This enables manufacturers to achieve greater cost efficiency, especially when scaling up production for high-volume applications. To further support customers, Evonik plans to provide comprehensive test data detailing the material’s friction and wear characteristics. This data will assist engineers and designers in optimizing the material’s performance for their specific use cases, ensuring precise calibration and maximum efficiency in real-world applications.
