Expro's latest contract extends its long-standing commitment to the UK's carbon capture and storage (CCS) industry, solidifying its role in developing the critical infrastructure needed to meet ambitious decarbonization targets.

Energy services giant Expro has announced a significant contract win to provide integrated well testing services for a high-profile carbon capture and storage (CCS) project offshore the UK. This pivotal award comes on the heels of the North Sea Transition Authority (NSTA) granting the first-ever carbon storage permit to the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) in December 2024 for the Endurance reservoir, located off England's North-East Coast.

The contract entrusts Expro with crucial services for appraising two wells within the Endurance reservoir, assessing their suitability for future CO2 storage. The production and injection testing of the Endurance aquifer will yield vital data necessary for characterizing the reservoir, forming a key component of the East Coast Cluster field development plan. Expro will leverage its extensive capabilities in well testing, fluid sampling and analysis, and subsea operations to deliver these services.

The Endurance reservoir boasts an impressive capacity to store up to 450 million tonnes of CO2. This capacity is deemed essential for the UK Government to achieve its ambitious CCS targets: capturing 20-30 million tonnes of CO2 annually by 2030 and escalating to over 50 million tonnes a year by 2035.

The Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP), a joint venture formed in 2020 by industry leaders bp, TotalEnergies, and Equinor, is the designated CO2 transportation and storage provider for the East Coast Cluster. This cluster is set to transport and store CO2 emissions from major industrial hubs in Teesside and the Humber.

Beyond its environmental significance, this contract is poised to safeguard local jobs in the North-East of Scotland, reinforcing Expro’s deep-rooted presence in the region. Expro’s dedicated well test team will operate from its regional center of excellence in Aberdeen, ensuring that local expertise is at the forefront of operations. Demonstrating a strong commitment to regional economic development, Expro will also prioritize engaging with UK-based suppliers.

Expro's involvement in CCS projects spans over two decades globally, including its instrumental role in Norway's pioneering Northern Lights project. This rich history, coupled with over 50 years of supporting the North Sea energy industry, positions Expro as a key player in the UK's decarbonization efforts.

This latest development underscores Expro’s continued dedication to advancing the UK’s green energy transition and solidifies its position at the forefront of the burgeoning CCS sector.
