Focus Graphite expanded Lac Tetepisca resources, strengthening North America’s graphite supply chain for electric vehicles, batteries, and clean energy industries.
Focus Graphite Inc. has announced a significant upgrade to the mineral resource estimate for its 100%-owned Lac Tetepisca Project in Quebec, confirming it as one of the largest identified graphite deposits globally. The updated estimate reports 120,163 kilotonnes of Indicated Mineral Resources at 10.27% graphitic carbon (Cg) and 24,143 kilotonnes of Inferred Mineral Resources at 9.88% Cg. This substantial resource expands upon the maiden estimate from February 2022, which already highlighted Lac Tetepisca's potential as a major source of high-quality flake graphite in North America.
The Manicouagan-Ouest Graphitic Corridor (MOGC) at Lac Tetepisca, discovered by Focus Graphite in 2012, has been extensively explored. Comprehensive drilling programs, particularly in 2019-2020 and 2022, were crucial in defining and expanding the mineralization. The 2022 campaign, involving 74 drill holes and over 14,900 meters, provided the essential data for this upgraded resource estimate, extending the confirmed graphite mineralization along an approximate 8-kilometer strike length. A key technological advancement contributing to this update is Focus Graphite's development and validation of a low-cost, AI-enabled in situ graphite flake size characterization technology. This innovation, integrated into the geometallurgical model, allows for high-resolution mapping of flake size distribution directly from drill cores, optimizing resource valuation and mine planning without extensive bulk metallurgical testing.
The economic implications of this discovery are significant. The high-grade nature of the deposit, based on a conservative 3.5% Cg cut-off grade, indicates robust project economics. The AI technology's preliminary findings suggest a potential inverse relationship between graphite grade and flake size, which could support a lower cut-off grade, further enhancing mine life and operational flexibility. Positioned alongside its flagship Lac Knife project, Lac Tetepisca solidifies Focus Graphite's role as a major supplier in the North American graphite market.
Industrially, this vast graphite resource is vital for meeting the surging global demand from electric vehicle (EV) and energy storage sectors. Focus Graphite aims to supply high-grade flake graphite products to North America's battery and green energy industries. The company is also committed to sustainable practices, pioneering environmentally friendly processing solutions and innovative battery technologies, including patent-pending silicon-enhanced spheroidized graphite, ensuring a chemical-free, eco-friendly supply chain.
Geopolitically, the development of such a substantial Canadian graphite deposit is critical for establishing a secure, locally sourced supply of essential minerals, thereby reducing reliance on foreign markets, especially China. This strategic importance is underscored by the Canadian government's support, including a $14.1 million grant to Focus Graphite for developing purification capabilities for defense applications. Quebec's low-cost hydroelectric power further enhances the project's economic viability and global competitiveness. In essence, the Lac Tetepisca project, with its impressive resource and advanced technological integration, positions Focus Graphite as a pivotal player in the future of critical minerals, supporting sustainable and secure supply chains for the burgeoning green energy transition.
