Glencore acquires 45% stake in South Carolina aluminium recycling plant, partnering with Alumicore to strengthen sustainable U.S. aluminium supply chain.
Glencore has recently confirmed that it has acquired a 45% ownership stake in an aluminium recycling and remelting facility located near Charleston in South Carolina. Prior to this acquisition, Glencore had already been financially involved with the plant by providing funding in return for certain marketing rights associated with its output. With this latest development, Glencore strengthens its position in the project, while the remaining 55% ownership will continue to be held by Alumicore. Alumicore will also take on the responsibility of operating and managing the facility, leveraging its technical and operational expertise in the aluminium recycling sector.
This strategic partnership highlights Glencore’s commitment to supporting and enhancing a robust, reliable, and sustainable aluminium supply chain within the United States. The company has already demonstrated its interest and involvement in the domestic aluminium industry through its existing investments, including a significant 30% stake in Century Aluminium, which is recognized as the largest producer of primary aluminium in the country. By increasing its footprint in recycling and remelting operations, Glencore is aligning itself with the growing emphasis on sustainability and circular economy practices in the metals industry.
Alumicore’s role in this collaboration is equally significant, as it brings considerable experience and proven capabilities in operating advanced aluminium processing facilities. The company currently manages a similar recycling and remelting plant in Monessen, Pennsylvania, and is also in the process of developing another modern, state-of-the-art processing and melting facility in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This upcoming facility will incorporate advanced sorting technologies, enabling more efficient separation and processing of recyclable aluminium materials. Collectively, these facilities are projected to achieve a combined recycling capacity exceeding 120,000 tonnes of aluminium annually, demonstrating substantial scale and efficiency in operations.
The collaboration between Glencore and Alumicore is expected to deliver multiple benefits, not only to the companies involved but also to the broader U.S. aluminium industry. By expanding recycling capacity and improving supply chain resilience, the partnership supports the availability of domestically sourced aluminium, reducing dependence on imports and contributing to national industrial strength. Additionally, the initiative aligns with environmental goals by promoting the reuse of aluminium, which significantly reduces energy consumption and emissions compared to primary production.
Looking ahead, both Glencore and Alumicore have expressed enthusiasm about working together to further develop the South Carolina facility. Their shared vision includes driving operational excellence, exploring opportunities for future growth, and maximizing value creation. The project is also expected to have a positive impact on local communities in South Carolina by generating employment opportunities and contributing to regional economic development. Overall, this partnership represents a forward-looking approach to combining industrial growth with sustainability and innovation in the aluminium sector.
