This collaboration, which also includes a strategic investment from Google in Energy Dome, marks a significant step towards enabling 24/7 carbon-free energy for grids powering Google's facilities and contributing to broader grid stability.
In a pioneering move set to redefine long-duration energy storage and accelerate the global transition to carbon-free energy, Energy Dome, a leader in the field, has announced a strategic global commercial partnership with tech giant Google. The collaboration centers on the deployment of Energy Dome’s innovative CO2 Battery technology, with the explicit goal of achieving carbon-free energy at an unprecedented scale for the grids that power Google’s vast operations. Complementing this commercial agreement, Google has also made a significant investment in Energy Dome.
The commercial agreement outlines the development of CO2 Battery projects across key geographical strategic areas, including Europe, America, and the Asia-Pacific region. The partnership aims for rapid deployment to help Google achieve its 2030 carbon-free energy goals. A pipeline of potential sites and projects has already been identified and is currently progressing through development and contracting stages.
Google’s foray into this commercial long-duration energy storage deal is an integral part of its ambitious commitment to power its global operations with 24/7 carbon-free energy by 2030. The selection of Energy Dome’s CO2 Battery is a testament to its proven efficacy and market readiness, demonstrating its capacity for deployment at the scale, speed, and affordability required to meet such an aggressive clean energy target worldwide.
The CO2 Battery boasts an impressive capability to continuously dispatch energy for periods ranging from 8 to 24 hours. This flexibility is crucial, as it unlocks sufficient firm electricity to satisfy both the baseload and fluctuating demands of large energy users. A key advantage of the CO2 Battery’s modular and site-independent design is its reliance on readily available, off-the-shelf equipment, mitigating supply chain bottlenecks and ensuring a highly scalable solution for efficient and cost-effective energy storage on a massive scale.
Beyond energy storage, the CO2 Battery also contributes to grid stability through its mechanical components, which provide natural inertia from rotating machinery. This feature is particularly vital given the simultaneous increase in solar and wind power generation (which inherently lack inertia) and the decommissioning of traditional fossil-fuel power stations, leading to a loss of their inherent inertia. By acting as a "shock absorber" that smooths out sudden frequency changes, the CO2 Battery plays a critical role in maintaining grid resilience.
Maud Texier, Director of EMEA Energy at Google, emphasized the broader impact of this collaboration, stating, “By helping to scale this first-of-a-kind LDES technology, we hope to help communities everywhere gain greater access to reliable, affordable electricity and support grid resilience as we integrate more renewable energy sources.”
Claudio Spadacini, Founder and CEO of Energy Dome, highlighted the strategic nature of the agreement, saying, “We’re proving that a 24/7 cost-effective and carbon-free energy supply is achievable with the right technology and partnership model.”
