Harena secured $4.48 million to advance Madagascar’s rare earth project, targeting 2028 production and strengthening global magnet material supply.

Harena Rare Earths has taken a significant step toward developing its Ampasindava rare earth project in Madagascar after securing $4.48 million in funding from the U.S. International Development Finance Corporation (IDFC). The financial support will be used to accelerate the project's early-stage development by financing the construction of a pilot processing plant, laboratory testing programs, and environmental protection initiatives. These activities are expected to strengthen the project's technical and environmental credentials while preparing it for larger-scale financing in the coming years.

The Ampasindava project is one of the notable ion-adsorption rare earth deposits under development outside China. Ion-adsorption deposits are considered particularly attractive because they can produce valuable heavy and light rare earth elements that are essential for permanent magnets used in electric vehicles, wind turbines, robotics, defense equipment, and advanced electronics. With growing global efforts to diversify rare earth supply chains, the Madagascar project is expected to play an increasingly important role in supporting critical mineral security.

Harena plans to commence commercial production at the Ampasindava project by the middle of 2028. Once operational, the facility is expected to produce approximately 4,000 metric tonnes of rare earth oxides annually. This output will include nearly 1,700 metric tonnes of high-value magnetic rare earth oxides, particularly praseodymium-neodymium (Pr-Nd), dysprosium, and terbium. These materials are among the most sought-after rare earth elements because they are indispensable in manufacturing high-performance permanent magnets that power clean energy technologies and electric mobility solutions.

The overall investment required for the project is estimated at around $150 million. The recently secured IDFC funding represents an important milestone that will help reduce development risks and support future fundraising efforts for full-scale construction and commercial operations.

Beyond mining activities in Madagascar, Harena is also exploring opportunities to establish downstream rare earth processing facilities in both the United States and Europe. Developing refining and processing capabilities closer to end-use manufacturers could enhance supply chain resilience and reduce dependence on traditional processing hubs.

To support these ambitions, the company is engaged in discussions with several prominent industry participants, including MP Materials, USA Rare Earth, and Solvay, regarding potential strategic partnerships and cooperation. Such collaborations could cover processing, refining, technology sharing, or supply agreements, further strengthening Harena's position within the rapidly expanding global rare earth value chain.

As governments and industries increasingly prioritize secure supplies of critical minerals, the Ampasindava project is positioned to become an important contributor to the global market for magnetic rare earth materials over the coming decade.

Impact on Product and Chemical Commodity Prices

The funding strengthens the long-term outlook for rare earth oxides, particularly praseodymium-neodymium (Pr-Nd), dysprosium, and terbium, by supporting the development of a new non-Chinese supply source. Although production is not expected until 2028, the project improves future supply security for permanent magnet manufacturers serving electric vehicles, wind energy, and electronics industries. For chemical commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst, there is unlikely to be any immediate price impact due to the project's early development stage. However, over the medium to long term, increased rare earth oxide availability could ease supply concerns, enhance market competition, and contribute to greater price stability for magnetic rare earth materials.
