Himadri commissions 70,000 MTPA carbon black line, boosting total capacity to 250,000 MTPA and strengthening presence in high-value speciality segments.
Himadri Speciality Chemical has begun commercial production at its newly installed speciality carbon black line with a capacity of 70,000 metric tonnes per annum (MTPA) at its Mahistikry facility in Hooghly, West Bengal. This development represents a significant milestone in the company’s ongoing expansion strategy and reinforces its commitment to strengthening its footprint in high-value carbon materials.
Following this brownfield expansion, the company’s overall carbon black production capacity has risen to 250,000 MTPA. Notably, the Mahistikry site now accounts for 130,000 MTPA of speciality carbon black capacity, making it the largest single-location facility of its kind globally. This scale provides Himadri with a strong competitive edge, enabling it to cater efficiently to growing global demand while maintaining operational flexibility and cost advantages.
The expansion is strategically aligned with the increasing shift in end-user industries toward high-performance and customized carbon black grades. Sectors such as plastics, inks, paints, and coatings are increasingly demanding advanced materials that offer superior functionality, consistency, and application-specific properties. By enhancing its speciality carbon black capabilities, Himadri is positioning itself to capture a larger share of these premium segments, which typically deliver higher margins than conventional commodity-grade products.
Speaking on the commissioning, Chairman, Managing Director, and CEO Anurag Choudhary described the project as a crucial step in the company’s next phase of growth. He emphasized that the new line significantly strengthens Himadri’s ability to produce advanced carbon materials tailored to specific industrial requirements. This move is part of the company’s broader vision to evolve from a traditional carbon black manufacturer into a technology-driven supplier of high-performance materials.
The newly commissioned facility integrates advanced manufacturing technologies designed to ensure efficiency, reliability, and sustainability. It features modern process systems, robust quality control mechanisms, and energy-efficient operations, all of which contribute to the consistent production of high-quality speciality grades. These capabilities are essential for meeting the stringent requirements of global customers, particularly in industries where precision and performance are critical.
In addition to boosting production capacity, the expansion is expected to positively impact the company’s financial performance. The increased focus on speciality carbon black, which commands better pricing and margins, is likely to drive revenue growth over the medium term. As demand for advanced materials continues to rise across industries, Himadri is well-positioned to leverage its expanded capacity and technological capabilities to strengthen its market position both domestically and internationally.
Overall, the commissioning of the new 70,000 MTPA line marks a pivotal advancement in Himadri’s growth trajectory, enhancing its scale, technological strength, and ability to serve evolving market needs.
