Honeywell supports Dangote with advanced technologies to boost petrochemical production, strengthen supply chains, reduce imports, and drive industrial and economic growth.
Honeywell is set to supply advanced petrochemical process technologies and catalysts to Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, supporting the production of plastics and detergent-related materials. This collaboration is expected to play a significant role in strengthening regional energy security by lowering dependence on imports, while also encouraging industrial expansion and reinforcing supply chains across West Africa.
As part of this partnership, Dangote will implement Honeywell UOP’s Oleflex™ technology to significantly boost its propylene production capacity. The refinery is projected to generate an additional 750,000 metric tons of propylene annually. This increase will directly support the manufacturing of a wide range of products, including packaging materials, consumer goods, and various industrial items. Propylene is a crucial building block in the petrochemical industry, and this enhanced capacity positions Dangote to better meet both regional and global demand.
In addition to propylene production, Dangote will also utilize a range of Honeywell UOP’s petrochemical technologies and catalysts to produce 400,000 metric tons per year of linear alkylbenzene (LAB). LAB is an essential raw material used in the production of detergents and surfactants, which are widely applied in both household cleaning products and industrial cleaning solutions. Upon reaching full production capacity, the LAB facility located in Lekki is expected to rank among the largest plants of its kind worldwide, highlighting the scale and ambition of this project.
According to Aliko Dangote, President of Dangote Petroleum Refinery and Petrochemicals FZE, the collaboration with Honeywell aligns with the company’s broader goal of strengthening Nigeria’s industrial base. He emphasized that adopting advanced technologies will help reduce reliance on imported goods, foster economic growth, and enhance supply chain independence. Furthermore, the initiative is expected to enable Dangote to meet the increasing demand for consumer and industrial products, ultimately positioning the company as a major global supplier while contributing to sustainable economic development in the region.
The partnership between Dangote and Honeywell is built on a long-standing relationship centered around technological advancement and operational excellence. Honeywell has been instrumental in supporting the refinery through process technologies, automation systems, catalysts, and engineering expertise. These contributions are part of Dangote’s broader plan to significantly expand its refining capacity—from 650,000 barrels per day to an ambitious 1.4 million barrels per day by 2028. Achieving this milestone would establish Dangote’s facility as the largest petroleum refinery in the world.
Rajesh Gattupalli highlighted that Dangote’s investments in advanced processing and digital technologies are key factors in elevating its position among leading global refinery and petrochemical operations. He noted that Honeywell’s solutions are designed to enhance efficiency, reliability, and production output across both existing and new facilities. This collaboration exemplifies how cutting-edge technologies can support manufacturers in meeting the rising global demand for essential petrochemical products while delivering long-term value and growth.
