Honeywell will supply automation systems for major UK CCS projects, supporting clean energy goals by enabling large-scale carbon capture, transport, and storage operations.
Honeywell has announced that it has been chosen by Technip Energies to deliver its advanced automation and safety technologies for two of the United Kingdom’s most important carbon capture and storage (CCS) initiatives — the Net Zero Teesside Power (NZT Power) project and the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP) project. These developments are central to the country’s long-term plan to scale up low-carbon infrastructure, decarbonize energy production and industrial operations, and position the UK as a leader in next-generation climate solutions.
As part of this collaboration, Honeywell will supply its state-of-the-art Integrated Control and Safety Systems (ICSS), which create a streamlined automation architecture by combining control and safety functions across both NZT Power and NEP sites. This integrated approach is designed to improve reliability, support safe operations, and enhance the overall efficiency of the facilities involved in capturing, transporting, and storing carbon dioxide.
NZT Power is set to become the world’s first gas-powered electricity station fully equipped with large-scale carbon capture capabilities. Once commissioned, the Teesside facility will play an essential role in reducing emissions from energy generation and helping the UK accelerate progress toward its net-zero targets. The power station is being designed to generate more than 740 megawatts of flexible, dispatchable low-carbon electricity — enough to meet the annual energy needs of over one million homes. Through its capture system, the project will remove up to two million tonnes of CO2 every year. This captured carbon will then be transported to the NEP network, which is responsible for securely transferring and storing the CO2 offshore.
The Northern Endurance Partnership is equally critical to the UK’s decarbonization blueprint. The NEP project will gather carbon dioxide from multiple industrial and power facilities across the Teesside and Humber regions — collectively referred to as the East Coast Cluster — and move it to dedicated storage beneath the North Sea. The network will rely on a deep subsurface saline aquifer structure and a wider pipeline system that links emitters across the region. Honeywell’s automation technologies will be integrated into this new infrastructure, helping ensure smooth operation of the overall transport and storage chain.
Menzo Bijmolen, vice president and general manager for EMEA, Industrial Automation Projects & Automation Solutions at Honeywell, emphasized the importance of the company’s role, noting that next-generation automation technology is essential for scaling carbon capture solutions securely and efficiently. He stated that Honeywell’s expertise will be instrumental in supporting the UK’s vision for a cleaner, more resilient energy future.
Technip Energies, working alongside GE Vernova and construction partner Balfour Beatty, is leading the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) efforts for both major CCS projects. The NZT Power and NEP initiatives are considered foundational components of the UK’s decarbonization roadmap and are expected to serve as global examples of how CCS infrastructure can be deployed at scale. By capturing and safely storing millions of tonnes of carbon emissions each year, these projects aim to significantly reduce the environmental footprint of heavy industry while encouraging continued investments in clean-energy technologies.
Honeywell’s participation reinforces its broader commitment to advancing the global energy transition through cutting-edge automation and digital solutions. With a strong UK presence — including nearly 4,000 employees across more than 20 locations — the company is well positioned to support the government’s Clean Power 2030 objectives through its critical contributions to the NZT Power and NEP projects.
