Huntsman, a global leader in polyurethane-based solutions, has announced a significant leap forward in electric vehicle (EV) fire safety with the launch of its new intumescent polyurethane coating system, POLYRESYST EV5005. This innovative coating is engineered to provide passive fire protection to metal and composite substrates within EVs, bolstering structural integrity and enhancing fire safety in battery cells—a crucial concern in the Automotive Industry.

The debut of POLYRESYST EV5005 is timely, as EV manufacturers are intensifying their efforts to improve fire safety. This drive is fueled by new regulatory mandates, rapid technological advancements, and heightened consumer awareness.

The POLYRESYST EV5005 polyurethane system is designed for efficient spray application, offering flexibility without thickness limitations, enabling it to meet stringent fire safety standards. Key attributes include rapid curing, high mechanical strength, hydrolytic stability, and abrasion resistance. This combination results in a tough yet flexible layer that can substantially enhance the structural integrity of core components during an impact or thermal event, providing a vital layer of passive protection.

Beyond its superior performance, POLYRESYST EV5005 is engineered to optimize manufacturing processes. Its compatibility with automated production lines promises considerable time and cost savings for manufacturers. The technology demonstrates excellent adhesion to various substrates and boasts a fast setting time, hardening in mere seconds. This eliminates the need for oven or post-curing, and its short tack-free time allows for quick application of subsequent coats and immediate movement of coated substrates, thereby streamlining production.

Huntsman's new intumescent coating complements its existing suite of polyurethane-based solutions for EV battery applications. These include:

SHOKLESS polyurethane systems: Lightweight foam systems for encapsulating EV batteries, offering mechanical strength, thermal insulation, and vibration dampening.

VITROX WCM and RTM systems: Technologies for creating lightweight upper battery casing covers with excellent thermal resistance and improved thermal runaway protection.

RIMLINE FC polyurethane system: A moldable foam core technology for lightweight, durable composite sandwich applications in EVs, suitable for battery enclosures and other structural parts.

Attendees of The Battery Show Europe are invited to a conference presentation titled "Enabling Next-Gen EV Batteries with Huntsman Material Innovations."
