India's DMAPA Prices Rise 29.8% in May as Supply Tightness Overshadows Feedstock Weakness

India's Dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA) prices surged by 29.8% in May 2026 despite a significant 17.3% decline in feedstock dimethylamine costs. The increase was primarily driven by tight product availability, limited spot market supplies, and strong demand from personal care, water treatment, and specialty chemical industries. Buyers accelerated purchases amid concerns over future supply constraints, while suppliers maintained firm pricing due to restricted inventories. Robust consumption of DMAPA in surfactants, cationic polymers, and chemical intermediates outweighed feedstock cost reductions, highlighting the strong influence of supply-demand fundamentals on the Indian market during the month.

Dimethylaminopropylamine (DMAPA) prices in India recorded a remarkable increase of 29.8% during May 2026, defying expectations as the key feedstock dimethylamine (DMA) witnessed a substantial 17.3% decline over the same period. The sharp upward movement highlighted the dominance of supply-side constraints and strong downstream demand over raw material cost trends, pushing domestic DMAPA values significantly higher across the Indian specialty amines market.

Market participants noted that the price rally was largely driven by tightening product availability and sustained procurement from downstream surfactant, personal care, water treatment, and specialty chemical manufacturers. DMAPA remains a critical intermediate in the production of cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB), a widely used surfactant in shampoos, liquid soaps, and personal care formulations, making demand from the consumer goods sector a key support factor. Industry studies continue to identify personal care applications as the largest consumption segment for DMAPA globally, with Asia-Pacific, particularly India and China, remaining important growth centers.

Despite the decline in dimethylamine costs, producers reported that DMAPA supply remained constrained due to limited spot availability, cautious inventory management, and firm operating rates among domestic manufacturers. Several buyers accelerated purchases to secure material amid concerns about future supply tightness, further amplifying upward pricing momentum. Market sources indicated that traders were reluctant to offer large volumes in the spot market, preferring to preserve inventories against anticipated demand growth from personal care and water treatment sectors.

Demand conditions remained supportive throughout May. India’s expanding personal care industry continued to consume significant volumes of DMAPA-derived surfactants, while demand from water treatment chemical manufacturers also remained healthy. DMAPA is widely utilized in the production of cationic polymers and flocculants used in municipal and industrial water treatment applications, a segment that continues to benefit from infrastructure investment and tightening environmental standards.

The broader specialty chemicals sector also contributed to stronger consumption patterns. DMAPA finds applications in coatings, adhesives, textile auxiliaries, pharmaceutical intermediates, and agrochemical formulations, providing diversified demand support across multiple industries. Continued growth in India’s manufacturing and export-oriented specialty chemical segments encouraged steady procurement activity during the month.

Looking ahead, market participants expect DMAPA prices to remain elevated in the near term if supply availability remains restricted. Although lower dimethylamine costs could provide some production cost relief, sellers are likely to maintain firm pricing as long as downstream demand from personal care, water treatment, and specialty chemical industries remains robust.
