INEOS Styrolution launches 100% bio-attributed polystyrene for food packaging, cutting carbon emissions by 172% while meeting safety standards.
INEOS Styrolution, a prominent global player in styrenics, has announced the successful commercial rollout of its 100% bio-attributed polystyrene, branded as Styrolution® PS 158K BC100. This innovation marks a significant milestone in sustainable packaging, particularly for food applications. As of early 2025, food trays manufactured with this bio-based material have already made their debut in the Japanese retail market, thanks to a partnership with a major local retail chain.
The newly launched Styrolution® PS 158K BC100 is produced using a certified mass balance approach that complies with the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) system. This ensures that the material is derived entirely from bio-attributed feedstock, replacing conventional fossil-based sources. Notably, the material delivers a remarkable 172% reduction in carbon emissions when compared to traditional polystyrene, positioning it as a high-impact solution in reducing environmental footprints.
Beyond its sustainability credentials, Styrolution® PS 158K BC100 meets stringent global food safety and contact standards. It is fully compliant with the Japanese Food Sanitation Act and has secured an A-level certification from the Japan Chemical Innovation and Inspection Institute (JCII)—a mark of its commitment to food safety and hygiene. These certifications are essential for food-grade packaging and make the material suitable for widespread commercial use.
From a functional perspective, the bio-attributed polystyrene retains the high-performance characteristics typical of conventional polystyrene. It provides excellent heat resistance and optical clarity, both of which are critical in maintaining the quality, safety, and visual appeal of packaged food products. The material’s performance ensures it can be used without compromise, making it an ideal choice for food manufacturers and retailers aiming to adopt more sustainable packaging options without sacrificing quality.
Marcela Villegas, Vice President of Business Management APAC at INEOS Styrolution, expressed pride in the company’s achievement:
"We are thrilled to mark this milestone in integrating bio-attributed materials into everyday life. It shows that sustainability can be achieved while meeting regulatory standards, allowing businesses to progress in their environmental goals without compromising quality or safety."
