At least nine workers suffered burn injuries after an explosion occurred inside a furnace chamber at a private steel plant in Jharkhand’s Ramgarh district on Sunday. The incident took place during the afternoon in Murpa village, which falls under the jurisdiction of the Kuju police outpost.
According to Chief Factory Inspector Manish Sinha, the workers were injured when hot metal splashed out following the furnace explosion. All nine injured workers were initially taken to a private hospital in Ramgarh for medical treatment. Two workers who sustained critical injuries were later referred to a private hospital in Ranchi for specialized care.
Sinha said the factory inspector in Hazaribag has been instructed to conduct an investigation into the incident and submit a detailed report at the earliest. Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances that led to the furnace explosion, including workplace safety procedures and operating conditions at the facility.
Dr. Saurabh Kumar of the Ramgarh hospital confirmed that nine workers were brought to the medical facility with burn injuries. After an initial assessment, two workers in critical condition were transferred to Ranchi for further treatment.
The injured workers were identified as Kunjilal Ravidas, Parmeshwar Kumar Mahto, Ramesh Thakur, Rajendra Mahto and Sanjay Prasad, all from Ramgarh district. Rajendra Mahto and Ritesh Rana were reported to be from Hazaribag, while Dhananjay Singh is from Patna and Vijay Yadav is from Darbhanga in Bihar.
The incident has prompted government authorities to examine safety conditions at the steel plant. Ramgarh Labour Superintendent Anil Ranjan said officials from the labour department would visit the facility to assess workplace safety arrangements.
Industrial furnaces operate at extremely high temperatures, making furnace failures, molten-metal splashes and related incidents significant occupational hazards in steel manufacturing. The investigation will likely focus on whether the plant followed prescribed safety standards and whether any operational or equipment-related issue contributed to the explosion.
The incident could also lead authorities to review safety protocols across similar industrial facilities in the region. Depending on the findings, the plant may face additional inspections or corrective measures before normal operations continue.
For the steel industry, any temporary disruption at the affected facility could have a limited impact on regional production if operations are suspended. However, the broader market effect is expected to remain modest unless the incident results in a prolonged shutdown or significantly reduces steel output.
Impact on Products and ChemAnalyst-Tracked Chemical Commodity Prices
The immediate impact is likely to be limited to the affected steel plant, with possible temporary disruption in steel production if operations are suspended for safety inspections. Reduced production could tighten local availability of steel products and potentially provide short-term price support. However, the incident alone is unlikely to materially change broader steel prices unless the facility remains offline for an extended period. For chemical commodities tracked by ChemAnalyst, the impact should remain largely indirect and limited. Lower steel production could slightly reduce demand for industrial chemicals, refractories, oxygen and other process inputs. Therefore, most chemical commodity prices are expected to remain broadly stable, with only localized effects possible.
