Karelian Discovers Promising Copper Prospect in Northern Ireland

Karelian Diamond Resources has identified a significant new copper exploration target at the historic Cappagh copper mine within its KDR4 licence area in Northern Ireland. This complements existing nickel-copper-PGE findings and follows the registration of the Lahtojoki diamond mining concession in Finland, marking strategic expansion across multiple mineral sectors.

Karelian Diamond Resources has announced the identification of a promising new copper exploration target within its newly granted KDR4 licence area in Northern Ireland. This development marks a significant step forward for the company as it broadens its exploration portfolio beyond diamonds, into the increasingly strategic base metals sector.

The KDR4 licence area, recently secured by the company, includes territory known for historical mining activity and geological characteristics considered favourable for copper mineralization. According to Karelian, early investigations—consisting of desk-based research and preliminary reconnaissance—have led to the recognition of a potential exploration hotspot at the location of the historic Cappagh copper mine. This site, once operational in the past, is now drawing renewed attention due to its mineral potential and alignment with modern exploration criteria.

The company believes that the discovery of this copper target is not an isolated opportunity, but rather a complementary addition to the suite of mineral resources already identified in its Northern Ireland holdings. In earlier surveys, Karelian confirmed the presence of nickel, copper, and platinum group elements (PGEs) across other licences in the region, suggesting a geologically rich area with strong multi-metal potential.

Karelian’s CEO, Maureen Jones, expressed optimism about the development, stating: “The identification of the historic Cappagh copper mine within the recently granted KDR4 licence area is a very exciting development.” She emphasized that this new target represents a meaningful addition to the company’s existing mineral portfolio and could significantly enhance its exploration prospects in Northern Ireland.

To further assess the full potential of the area, Karelian is now preparing to undertake a detailed exploration program. This will involve systematic geological mapping and geochemical sampling around the historic Cappagh mine and surrounding regions. These activities aim to validate the initial findings and delineate viable zones for future drilling and resource estimation.

This announcement comes just days after another major milestone for the company. Earlier this week, Karelian successfully registered the Lahtojoki mining concession in Finland. This registration is a critical step in the company’s objective to establish the European Union’s first operational diamond mine, underscoring its commitment to developing both precious and base metal resources across multiple jurisdictions.

Karelian’s recent progress reflects a strategic approach to resource diversification and regional exploration. By capitalizing on historical data and modern geoscientific methods, the company is positioning itself as a dynamic player in both the diamond and broader minerals sector.
