HOUSTON [US]: KBR, a global engineering firm, has announced the selection of their green Ammonia technology K-GreeN for the HyEx project in Chile. The project partner Enaex chose KBR to help bring their vision of a sustainable green Ammonia production to life.

Scientists are researching ways to make green Ammonia production in plants more stable. This project, called HyEx, is attempting to find technologies that will help plants adjust to fluctuations in renewable energy from photovoltaic power plants. By using the project results, it is hoped that efficient and reliable operation of green Ammonia production can be achieved.

Construction crews have begun work on an Ammonia plant in the Antofagasta Region of Chile. The plant, located in Tocopilla, is expected to produce 18,000 short tons of Ammonia annually.

The feasibility study has been funded and is projected to be completed by 2025 with Japanese firm Toyo Engineering Corporation (TOYO) and global Ammonia marketer Mitsui also involved. This is sure to be an exciting development for the HyEx project and its partners.

“We are thrilled to be part of this project that will demonstrate Chile’s potential to harness renewable energy for green Ammonia production,” stated Doug Kelly, KBR president, Technology.

“The innovative concepts that will be incorporated in this project will achieve industrial scale production of green Ammonia using renewable energy from photovoltaic and wind power.”

KBR has been providing licensing and design services for grassroot Ammonia plants around the world since 1943. With over 250 installations to date, KBR continues to grow its presence in the industry.
