Kemira Expands Water Business with REPUR Activated Carbon Acquisition

Kemira Oyj has finalized the acquisition of REPUR S.r.l., an Italian company specializing in activated carbon reactivation services for municipal and industrial water treatment. The move reinforces Kemira’s commitment to expanding its sustainable water treatment portfolio while supporting the growing demand for circular economy solutions across the global water sector.

Headquartered in Italy, REPUR focuses on the thermal reactivation of spent activated carbon used in water purification systems. Instead of discarding exhausted carbon and replacing it with newly manufactured material, the company restores the adsorption capacity of used activated carbon through specialized regeneration processes. This approach enables customers to reuse the material multiple times, reducing waste, lowering operating costs, and minimizing the environmental footprint of water treatment operations.

REPUR generated slightly more than EUR 5 million in revenue during 2025 and has a workforce of 21 employees. Although Kemira confirmed the completion of the transaction, both companies agreed not to disclose the financial value of the acquisition.

The acquisition aligns with Kemira’s long-term growth strategy, which prioritizes expansion in water treatment technologies and investments that promote sustainability and resource efficiency. As regulatory requirements for water quality become stricter and industries seek more environmentally responsible treatment solutions, demand for activated carbon and its regeneration services continues to increase. Tuija Pohjolainen-Hiltunen, Executive Vice President of Water Solutions at Kemira, described the acquisition as another step in implementing the company's growth strategy. She noted that activated carbon has become increasingly important in removing contaminants from water, while regeneration and reactivation technologies contribute to circular resource management by extending the useful life of carbon materials and reducing reliance on virgin resources.

Following the acquisition, REPUR will become part of Kemira’s Water Solutions business unit. The company’s operations will continue from its existing facility in Italy, ensuring continuity for customers and employees while allowing Kemira to leverage REPUR’s technical expertise within its broader global network.

The transaction also reflects a broader trend in the water treatment industry, where companies are investing in circular technologies that improve resource efficiency and reduce environmental impacts.
