LANXESS has introduced Vulkanox 4060, a new anti-aging agent developed for the tire industry as a potential alternative to 6PPD. The product is based on N,N'-Dicyclohexyl-p-phenylenediamine (CCPD) and is designed to provide tire manufacturers with comparable protection against oxygen and ozone while offering an improved environmental profile.
6PPD is widely used in tire manufacturing because it helps protect rubber compounds from degradation caused by exposure to oxygen and ozone. However, growing environmental concerns surrounding its transformation product, 6PPD-quinone, have increased pressure on the tire industry to identify safer alternatives. The compound has been associated with acute toxicity concerns for aquatic organisms, including coho salmon, and has attracted increasing regulatory and environmental scrutiny.
LANXESS says testing of CCPD quinone, the corresponding transformation product of Vulkanox 4060, showed no observed acute effects in coho salmon studies up to the compound's solubility limit. The company believes these findings could strengthen the case for CCPD as a more environmentally compatible solution for tire applications.
The development also marks an important regulatory milestone. Vulkanox 4060 has completed EU REACH registration, enabling its use in the European market. LANXESS expects this approval to support broader commercialization as tire manufacturers increasingly evaluate alternatives to conventional 6PPD.
Holger Graf, Head of LANXESS' Functional Tire Additives Business Line, said the product was developed in response to the ecotoxicological and regulatory challenges facing the tire industry. According to the company, extensive testing conducted with customers has demonstrated that CCPD can deliver technical performance comparable to 6PPD while providing a significantly improved environmental profile.
LANXESS has already planned initial commercial production of Vulkanox 4060 for the fourth quarter of 2026. The company expects strong initial demand from customers in the United States and Europe, where environmental regulations and sustainability requirements are becoming increasingly important.
The product was developed under the company's Safe and Sustainable by Design approach. CCPD was selected by considering factors including degradability, bioaccumulation potential, aquatic toxicity and regulatory requirements.
For tire manufacturers, Vulkanox 4060 could help reduce future regulatory and supply-chain risks associated with 6PPD. The launch also reflects a broader shift toward sustainable chemical additives as automotive and tire companies seek to reduce the environmental footprint of their products while maintaining performance.

Vulkanox 4060 could accelerate the replacement of 6PPD in tire manufacturing, particularly in Europe and the United States, as producers seek alternatives with stronger environmental credentials. Commercial production planned for Q4 2026 could improve availability and encourage tire manufacturers to qualify CCPD in new formulations. Demand for Vulkanox 4060 and its chemical feedstocks may gradually increase, supporting prices if adoption expands rapidly. Conversely, broader substitution could weaken long-term demand for 6PPD and place downward pressure on its pricing.
