Late August 2025: Sinopec Cuts Acetone Prices in China

In late August 2025, CFR Qingdao, China, acetone prices were softening amid weaker coatings sector demand. Monsoon rains and an off-season lull led to flat production with inventories full, with East China shipments down to 41KT and port inventory around 27.5KT. Sinopec's price cuts showcase that operating rates were weakening below 75%, while the Intra-Asia Container Index is easing supply restrictions with a 9% drop. However, the feedstock benzene prices increased in late August futures and the decline of U.S. inventory by 6 million barrels.

Over the latter half of August xxxx, acetone prices on a CFR Qingdao, China basis, tumbled due to the seasonal downturn and low downstream demand, especially in the Bisphenol A (BPA) sector. Further dampening the environment in the downstream markets was the monsoon rains which limited activity in the paints and coatings industry, hence suppressing offtake. While feedstock benzene prices have increased slightly, the plentiful supply from Asian exporters, and easy customs clearance has led to a deeper bearish market sentiment pushing acetone prices lower.

As per ChemAnalyst, the acetone prices in China are expected to see a slight increase in September xxxx. From a supply perspective, traders could start securing products for Qx production needs, and domestic plants could witness a little change, with the expected operating rate at xxx for phenol-ketone.
